Dear Orville,
After two decades of 3D workflow innovation, we have made the difficult decision to wind down development of Modo, following the release of 17.1 later this year.
This will enable Foundry to focus efforts on our core products and new solutions for the media and entertainment industry.
We understand that this news may come as a surprise, especially for those of you who have relied on Modo over the years. We want to express our deepest gratitude for your loyalty and support. The passion and engagement of the Modo community has been inspiring, and we want to thank you for being part of this journey.
What this means for you:
Continued support: Your maintenance will continue until the end of your current term, and we will continue to provide support during this period.
Automatic contract cancellation: At the end of your maintenance term, your contract will automatically be canceled and no further charges will be applied. This does not affect your perpetual license rights.
License extension: As an existing customer, you can obtain an extended license so that you can move between machines as needed in future, without the need for a license transfer. Your extended license can be accessed here, and can be downloaded and activated anytime up until October 31 2025.
Thank you once again for your trust over the years. We understand that change can be difficult and we’re here to support you as you transition to another 3D workflow — so if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our support team at support@foundry.com.
Warm regards,
Foundry Team
It never felt the same after Brad.
It sort of felt like it was losing momentum.
Sad day really.
If the boat is sinking, it's better to get off now than wait, right?
Where do we go from here?
Been around since 301 and wish what used to make modo great could continue.
Those committed to a modo-like approach could look at Lightwave, which is still alive (unless they follow suit).

As a valued Modo user, we would like to offer you a Modo EOL extended license to say thank you for your support throughout the years.
This license will be valid for 10 years from Nov 7, 2024 and will enable you to continue using any version of Modo up to our last release, Modo 17.1.
You can reuse this license to move between machines as needed in future, without the need for a license transfer. Please follow the guidance below to install the license on each machine you want to run Modo on. Instructions on making the license available across a network are available further down.
NOTE: You can install this extended license alongside an existing Modo license. Similarly, any other product licenses already installed on your machine should not be affected.
NOTE: Modo may continue to function on future operating systems but since we will not be issuing patches or updates to address potential conflicts, we cannot guarantee compatibility with future operating system updates.
If there's an upgrade path with huge promotion from modo 801 to 17 I would consider it for old times sake.
I now use blender but I miss modo's modelling workflow.
It appears that anyone can download the license and current version of modo - though I am not sure the Foundry has said that so it may be like the "free" Adobe apps when they made versions that didn't require activation following the failure of their servers for CS2 but they were intended only for those with a real license.
I actually sent an email to Foundry sales not too long ago to try to upgrade my 801 to 17. But, if I can use the EOL license too that would be great.
I'm waiting for Foundry sales to get to me. I asked if 801 users can also use EOL license.
You can just download the latest version from their website, apply the EOL license, and you're good to go.
P.S. Since Apple bought Pixelmator not too long ago, hopefully they can buy modo too.
I'm fairly sure 10 was the last one with a use on any machine you like license, so you should be fine. I still have my 901 license if I need it in 10 years, although whether it will still run on any operating systems at that point is another issue.
True (I think there was a final, optional patch for 10 that enabled account-based activation), and I did in fact get an email - perhaps, although there may not have been enough users to keep modo viable there were enough to require sending the emails in batches.
