The council received a petition from the residents of Duncan Street, Arncliffe requesting the implementation of a Residential Parking Scheme (RPS) and the withdrawal of current parking fines recently issued to them.
Residents say they have faced an increasingly challenging parking situation due to the influence of workers from the construction of numerous high-rise buildings.
Duncan Street's proximity to the airport has seen it become the preferred parking spot for travellers, exacerbating the scarcity of available parking spaces of residents..
"Due to these factors, many residents often find no available parking in front of their home," the petition states.
"As a temporary measure, some have resorted to using footpaths for parking, ensuring not to obstruct the road or the full width of the footpath. However, the practice has led to the issuance of heavy fines from the council.
"Some residents have been disproportionately targeted for heavy fines due to the complete lack of street parking directly in front of their property making the situation particularly untenable."
The residents are asking for Residents Parking Permits applicable all-day, ensuring the limited parking spaces are utilised appropriately and fairly.
"We believe a Residential Parking Permit would deter non-residents including airport travellers and workers from nearby developments form occupying residential parking spaces for longer periods and prevent the need for residents to use footpaths for parking, thereby reducing the risk of fines.
"This issue has caused considerable inconvenience and frustration among residents. We urge the council to take immediate action."
The council previously consulted with residents in Duncan Street, Charles Street and Kyle Street in 2014 for the proposal to implement an RPS but it was not supported by the council because it did not meet the required RMS Permit Parking Scheme guidelines.
A report recommended the Council undertake fresh community consultation with the residents of Duncan Street, Kyle Street and Charles Street, Arncliffe, on a proposal to implement an RPS.
