Firefighters rescued a man from water in Oxfordshire during a major emergency incident which included an air ambulance. 

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue vehicles were first reported on the scene in Jericho, Oxford at about 8.45 this morning (Wednesday, December 18). 

An air ambulance was in attendance and landed on Port Meadow, while other emergency responders closed Mount Place and Cranham Street to access the towpath.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service were called on this morning, sending two fire engines from Rewley Road fire station, a fire engine from Slade fire station, plus a rescue tender vehicle from Kidlington fire station to the rear of Whitworth Place, Canal Street, Oxford.

"An adult male was rescued from the water by the fire and rescue crews and then received care from the ambulance service prior to going to hospital.

"Fire and rescue crews left the scene at 10:15am."

A Thames Valley Air Ambulance spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our helicopter was dispatched to provide advanced critical care at an incident in Oxford this morning.”

Eyewitness Lisa Marie Davie said: "I was walking my dog and heard a lot of sirens, I walked past the bridge on Mount Place by the canal and saw paramedics on the opposite side treating a man.

"There were police, fire and paramedics on scene, and I also saw the air ambulance.

"It was horrible to witness that, I hope he pulls through."

Thames Valley Police have been approached for comment.
