Iran stops supplying Syria with oil, could Russia fill the void?

The fate of the Syrian energy security hangs on a thread as evidence shows that Iran stopped supplying oil to the country. In the new chessboard, where Assad is no longer the rule maker, Russia could step in to become the best energy partner of Syria and gain new leverage.

The fast-developing political scenario in Syria, where the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, sustained by other rebel and Islamist factions, managed to topple Bashar al-Assad’s after decades of rule is becoming even more convoluted because of energy security concerns. Iran, the major supporter of Assad in Damascus, is now stopping to supply oil by sea to Syria (Map 1).
