Welcome back! The news never seems to slow down. The Trump transition is under way. The Biden Administration is looking toward its final days. Pardons. Nominations. Congress trying to get its year-end business done. Let's talk about whatever you've got on your mind.

Given Trump's history of abuse, why wouldn't the president pardon his son?

Oh, goodness, I hope we don't reach the point where Trump becomes the benchmark by which all other presidential decisions are measured. Or are you suggesting that Biden was looking forward in fear that his son Hunter would be a target of the next administration? Honestly, I think the calculation here was pretty evident and understandable: The president was following a father's instinct. But he did go back on his word not to do exactly what he did, and in his claim that the prosecution -- by his own Justice Department -- was unfair, he bolstered Trump's claims about politicization and weaponization. And the breadth of the pardon was practically without precedent. Unsurprisingly, his decision has not gone over well with the public. Only two in 10 Americans approve.

Question
How bad will the incoming administration get?
Guest
2:04 a.m.
I see two schools of thought concerning the next administration. One group is thinking democracy is over and that's final and the other group thinks that our country will be a bit battered, but democracy will prevail. Is it that we don't know how many, possibly critical, rules and norms will be broken in the next four years or is it that there are definite guard rails in place that will prevent permanent damage?

I'm still of the optimistic view/hope that the guardrails will be tested, but they will hold. And the midterm elections are only two years away. Only once since FDR in 1934 did a president's party not lose ground. That was in 2002, when the country was still rallying around George W. Bush post 9/11. So it seems to me, Trump is working on a pretty small time frame, and to the degree he overreaches, the consequences could be severe.

Question
Will the Senate approve these substandard Cabinet nominees?
Guest
2:07 a.m.
Sadly the Senate GOP members will fold like cheap lawn chairs and approve Patel, Hegseth and RFK Jr. They care more for the approval of Trump and the MAGAt voters than considering the long term well being of the country. We are in for a rocky time.

I agree that at the moment it appears they should change that language in the Constitution to "advise and relent." And the president-elect's allies are putting incredible pressure on the senators who have yet to fold. But what comes out in the confirmation hearings on some of these nominees could get the public more engaged and swing things toward the other direction.

Reporters don’t ask interviewees what exactly Trump was going to do to make the economy better. Why?
Brian De Vriese
2:09 a.m.
I have listened to many interviews with Trump supporters who say they are voting for him because of the economy. I have never heard a reporter ask what the supporter heard Trump say he was going to do about it. Why not?
Karen Tumulty

I think voters have been asked that question a lot. And they mentioned a lot of things, including tightening the border and getting tough on trade. But mostly, they were (1) angry at the current situation, especially high prices, and looking for a way to express that anger and (2) of the belief -- and yes, I know that the statistics say otherwise -- that their economic situation was better when he was president.

How do you think Trump will arrest all 11,000,000 immigrants?

How do you think Trump will arrest all 11000,000 immigrants?
Karen Tumulty

Short answer: He won't. But there no doubt will be a lot of arrests and deportations, and this reporting from NBC is chilling: The incoming Trump administration intends to rescind a long-standing policy that has prevented Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from arresting undocumented people at or near so-called sensitive locations, including houses of worship, schools and hospitals or events such as funerals, weddings and public demonstrations without approval from supervisors, according to three sources familiar with the plan.

Which of Trump's appointees is most likely to not get Senate approval?
Pamela Mayo Clark
2:25 a.m.
Among Trump’s appointees, who are the most likely to fail to get enough support from the Senate?
Karen Tumulty
Opinion Columnist
2:25 a.m.
Until a couple of days ago, I thought Pete Hegseth was a goner. Now it looks as though he could hold on. Worth remembering: No cabinet nominee since John Tower in 1989 has been voted down on the Senate floor. Usually they are withdrawn when it becomes clear they don't have the votes. Every recent president has had to do that with at least one nominee. But as is the case with so much else, things don't work the same way in the Trump Era.

Question
Why are GOP supporters still riled up about Social Security and Medicare?
Guest
2:27 a.m.
The election is over and the president elect's big name supporters are still trying to get people riled up about future cuts to the 'third rail,' Social Security and Medicare. Even Republicans know that their constituents wouldn't put up with losing those things, so why are the supporters still talking about it?

I should begin by stipulating that the current entitlements system is fiscally unsustainable. I really wish the country could have a rational discussion about what needs to be done to ensure that Medicare and Social Security are around for our children and grandchildren. But Trump has taken that completely off the table, so everything else is just noise, I think.

Question
Could the pick of Pete Hegseth lead to a third world war?
Guest

He has never led a large institution, although he had combat experience. I am worred that his lack of management experience might lead to some miscalculations, which might result in catastrophe.

I wish there were something I could say to make you feel less worried about that. But yes, the Pentagon is a huge, huge organization and management challenge. And on top of that, it would be better to have someone in the job who is accustomed to seeing and handling intelligence, and who has done some deep thinking about the role of the US military in the world. We should keep an eye on who gets the key deputy jobs, not just at the Pentagon, but also in other agencies that deal with national security.

Question
What will happen if the Department of Education is eliminated?
Guest
2:44 a.m.
My brother is in education and he has pointed out that a ton of the proposals that are out there about education (taking away money from schools that teach critical race theory as an example) require 1) that there be federal money going to schools and 2) that there be a department of education to hand out the money and to decide that certain schools don't qualify to get it. So how can you eliminate the department in that circumstance. He didn't say that schools that teach critical race theory won't get any federal money because no schools will get any federal money. Seems like the disconnect has been missed.
Let's take it as read that critical race theory is taught occasionally in law schools, not elementary, middle or high schools.

Honestly, I'm not sure how seriously to take those kinds of threats and proposals. Mostly, education is handled (and funded) at the state and local level. To the degree the federal government is involved, it is through programs such as Title I aid to schools that have a high percentage of children who come from low-income homes. Head Start is funded through HHS; the school lunch program, through the Agriculture Department. Given that the Education Department didn't exist until the end of the Carter Administration, I assume that those kinds of programs could be handled -- as they were then -- through other agencies.

What "charges" does Trump want against the members of the congressional committee?

I am a little fuzzy on exactly what charges Trump wants to bring against the congressional committee on January 6, as well journalists in general, FBI personnel, etc.

So he will not go after criminals...criminals don't hang out at those places. he will go after those who are actually contributing to society.

I mentioned exactly this in an earlier answer. It's truly chilling, and if they are serious about carrying it out, would (I hope) generate an enormous backlash. It would be horrific if, for instance, people are afraid to go to the hospital when they are seriously ill.

I dealt with a lot of morbid scenarios in a piece earlier this year. If the electoral college as already met and voted (which happens in five days), the job goes to the VP-elect.
