ROCKLAND — A Cushing man is being held in lieu of bail after being arrested on a charge that he strangled a woman while on probation for a domestic violence conviction.
Eric M. Meklin, 41, is charged with Class B aggravated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
At his initial appearance Monday, Dec. 9, in the state court in Knox County, Judge Sarah Gilbert set bail at $3,500 cash. Assistant District Attorney Mari Wells had requested bail of $5,000 cash and defense attorney for the day Lynn Madison had asked for bail to be set at $2,000.
An affidavit filed with the court by the Knox County Sheriff's Office stated that Meklin twice grabbed a woman by the throat after she told him she no longer wanted to see him. The woman said she had trouble breathing. Police noticed a red mark on her neck, according to the affidavit.
Meklin denied the accusations to police, according to the affidavit.
The offenses are alleged to have occurred Nov. 22 in Cushing.
The prosecutor noted Meklin had been sentenced in June to three years in jail with all but 60 days suspended, to be followed by two years' probation for domestic violence assault, criminal threatening, and aggravated criminal trespass involving a different victim.
