Reuters, citing two Syrian security sources, said it was "very likely" that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was killed in a plane crash near Homs last night. The plane, which had taken off from Damascus International Airport, was believed to have been shot down. It was a mystery why the plane took a surprise U turn and disappeared off the map according to data from the Flightradar website.
