Can business model shifts spur EVs? Separate the battery from the body? The new MG Motor AE #EV in India, the Windsor (based on the Wuling Cloud EV) is interesting. https://lnkd.in/gH8in3PB It's not just the low price (for spec), but the Pay As You GO (PAYGO) model - where the upfront cost is kept low but you "rent" the battery @Rs 3.5/km. Add in electricity and it's probably above Rs 4/km - still cheaper than diesel by a bit and much cheaper than petrol cars of similar spec. But this model makes it much easier for low-km drivers to buy in to an EV since they don't pay the premium for an EV (high up-front capex meant to be recovered with lower operating costs). There are two possible risks here. (1) High usage drivers will end up paying more; (2) Low km drivers will probably cost the company. A more subtle question is how is this billed and enforced? Do you prepay? Do they bill periodically? If you don't pay, do they brick your car remotely? I am NOT a fan of aaS (as a service) models unless the end-user has a fair choice. (h/t Cory Doctorow). We should own the hardware we pay for and be free to use it fairly. Plus this seems like not just a security risk but a huge headache to get the software right. Seems like the dream system for hackers - cut the right wires (odometer wire alone?) and free driving??? I note another enticing draw for people wary of EVs - battery lifetime warranty for the first owner.

At a fork in the road, full with chances and challenges, here's a detailed assessment on the future of private electric buses in India as reported by CEEW. The data presents a frightening image: 95% of owners of e-buses encounter significant challenges in comparison to their diesel equivalents, particularly throughout the crucial 4–7 year loan payback term. Still, there are rays of promise lighting the way ahead. Mofussil routes are profitable endeavours for standard 12 metres and midi 9 metres AC e-buses, covering fewer than 120 km across the plains. In addition to offering financial stability, these shorter trips demonstrate our shared commitment to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. However, there will be detours and turns along the way. Longer routes are extremely challenging because profitability depends on a daily vehicle utilisation threshold of 400 km, which is made more challenging by the existing constraints on battery capacities. There are pockets of opportunity among these difficulties, especially in hilly areas. Thanks to the miracle of downhill regenerative braking, 9 metres e-bus operations excel in this situation, claiming a cost per kilometre that is far lower than that of their diesel counterparts. Toyota has struggled to make a strong impact with its first and only BEV, the BZ4X, selling only 13,910 units in the first half of 2024 – far behind competitors like BYD, which sold 17,000 units during the same period. Notably, two of the top 10 EV models in Europe are from Tesla, and three are from #Chinese-owned brands, such as Volvo and MG. Cross sectoral linkages and adaptation of new technology to the usage scenario, how it can be misread (by many) and in fact badly so!! Excellent example of this. Growth in two-wheelers and three-wheelers -- Primarily used for intracity travel and can be charged with household facility including overnight slow charging workable to a good extent. Degrowth in four-wheelers -- both intracity and intercity but charging is tedious, faster is even more so plus range anxiety in intercity travel, faster charging infra can be testing for the grid that has to back it, can even impact grid operations if in huge nos. Growth in commercial vehicles - Should be primarily intracity public transport, overnight charging at depot where strong enough grid connection can be possible, but covers limited segment. At the cost of repeating, when competing with ICE, EV has to produce better or at least equivalent user experience (buying, driving, charging, maintaining and of course reselling!!) for all these usage scenarios, wherever it can, it will grow but for other usage scenarios and till that moment, it will be growth to a very limited extent and ICE is there to stay and be dominant by a distant!! #ICE #electricvehicle #charginginfrastructure #userexperience #electricmobility

Hello, everyone I've done some analysis for Jaguar (Automobile) using Search Volume Trends (Minitab): Time Series Plot of Jaguar, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz India’s Search Volume. Jaguar (India): The plot shows relatively steady data with a few discrete jumps. It looks like there are sudden increases and plateaus, followed by occasional drops to zero or lower values. BMW (India): This series shows a dramatic spike around index 72, followed by a return to a more normal range. This could represent an unusual event or outlier impacting BMW’s performance in India. Audi (India): The data fluctuates more frequently between values around 4 and 2. There’s a noticeable trend where values fall, indicating volatility or a declining trend in performance. Mercedes-Benz (India): A similar sharp spike like BMW is observed around index 72. There’s a gradual rise leading up to this peak, which could signify a major event or product launch. Interpretation: This time series analysis suggests significant volatility and spikes in the Indian markets for premium automobile brands, particularly for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Audi shows consistent fluctuations, whereas Jaguar has fallen till with very less fluctuations and spike maintaining a low zero search volume stating negative customer recognition or want for the brand. The main factor deterring consumers from hybrid vehicles is their cost. Once hybrid cars are priced under ₹15 lakh, it will be a no-brainer for buyers to choose hybrids over traditional ICE vehicles.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬.🌟 While at Tata Motors, I worked on a cost reduction project titled "Cost Optimization for 44-Seater Bus by Implementing a Modified ECU software unit (Benchmarked from Trucks Product Line)." The goal was to significantly reduce costs per vehicle, and on that front, we succeeded. However, the project was implemented closer to the end of the financial year, which limited our ability to fully realize the cost reduction benefits. Additionally, the low volume factor impacted the overall cost savings, and we couldn't achieve the desired financial accrual from the project. Despite these challenges, the project taught me invaluable lessons: 𝟏. 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥: Implementing projects well before financial year-end can significantly impact their success. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Even if the overall cost reduction wasn't as expected, we achieved substantial savings on a per-vehicle basis, which is a success in its own right. 𝟑.
