#Taiwan / #China - US will continue Taiwan-friendly approach after election, senior Taiwan official says - from Reuters News Agency: The United States will continue its friendly approach towards Taiwan after the presidential election and Taiwan will work to prevent China "making trouble" during the transition, a senior Taiwanese security official said on Wednesday. Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency and neck and neck in the polls with Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris, has made comments on the campaign trail that Taiwan should pay to be protected and also accused the island of stealing American semiconductor business. Democratically-governed Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has faced a sustained military pressure campaign from Beijing over the past five years, including four major rounds of war games in the past two years. Speaking to reporters in parliament, Taiwan National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen noted the election's outcome was still unknown. "On relations across the Taiwan Strait we believe that the United States will continue its current approach of constraining China and being friendly to Taiwan," he said. Taiwan will continue communication with the current administration focusing on key issues for cooperation "in the next phase" and work with international partners to exchange information on China's intentions and military movements during the transition, Tsai added. "This is as to prevent the Chinese communists from taking advantage of the transition of the U.S. government and to prevent them from making trouble during the transition," he said. China's Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to request for comment. Also speaking to media at parliament, Taiwan Economy Minister Kuo Jyh-huei said the government was paying great attention to the election and making preparations no matter who won. However, Taiwan-U.S. economic ties are deep and won't be easy to change and the impact on the economy will be small irrespective of who the next president is, he added. Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claims, saying only the island's people can decide their future. The United States is Taiwan's most important international backer and arms supplier, even in the absence of formal diplomatic ties. https://lnkd.in/ezVguF4N

Taiwan's regional leader Lai Ching-te has escalated his calls for "Taiwan independence," pushing the idea of "two states." His assertions that "Taiwan has sovereignty" and that the People's Republic of China (PRC) cannot represent Taiwan are viewed as unfounded attempts to disrupt historical ties between Taiwan and the mainland. The perspective holds that Taiwan has always been part of China, reaffirmed post-1945 after its return from Japanese rule. The establishment of the PRC in 1949 is noted as solidifying its claim as the legitimate government of China, which includes Taiwan. Despite political discord stemming from civil conflict and foreign interference, the one-China principle remains vital in international relations, with over 180 countries recognizing it and the UN labeling Taiwan as "Taiwan, Province of China." Lai is criticized for misrepresenting facts to further his separatist agenda, suggesting that the Republic of China is synonymous with Taiwan, a notion perceived as divisive. The commentary warns that Lai's rhetoric could escalate tensions and threaten regional stability. It maintains that if the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) persists with its separatist stance, serious repercussions may arise for the Taiwanese populace. The conclusion signals optimism that as national rejuvenation progresses, more Taiwanese will reject Lai's separatist efforts, moving towards reunification with those on the mainland. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #China Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gQNsZ_FQ

Next year’s Osaka-Kansai Expo plans to offer free admission for children, which has garnered interest from about 70% of schools in Osaka Prefecture. - https://lnkd.in/g-QK9jDs OSAKA, Jun 03 (News On Japan) - Next year's Osaka-Kansai Expo plans to offer free admission for children, which has garnered interest from about 70% of schools in Osaka Prefecture. https://lnkd.in/gciPFk_y Osaka Prefecture has been promoting a project to invite children from age four through high school to the Expo at no cost, with a survey conducted by the end of May to determine the schools' intentions. Out of 1,900 schools, approximately 70%, or 1,390 schools, expressed their desire to participate. However, about 20% or 310 schools responded that they were "undecided or considering," and the remaining 200 schools did not provide a response. The initiative has faced some criticism over its survey methodology. For example, Mayor Kageyama of Katano City indicated that no schools in his city wished to participate, opting out of the initiative at the school level. Moreover, some critics pointed out that the survey did not offer an option for "not interested," compelling schools to choose "undecided or considering" to avoid follow-up inquiries from the prefectural government. This has led to questions about the integrity of the survey process. Source: YOMIURI Source

Living together has become a trend! Taiwan prepares for a super-aged society. Japanese scholars suggest developing AI robots Taiwan Life and Vision Magazine's 2024 "Age-Friendly Survey and Forum" revealed a growing trend of elderly individuals in Taiwan preferring to live independently or close to family rather than in traditional multi-generational households. Li Jianxing from Foresight Magazine emphasized the pressing need to address the risks of living alone among seniors. Hidenori Arai from Japan's National Longevity Medical Research Center proposed the development of AI robots to enhance the independence of the elderly and alleviate caregiver shortages. By 2025, over 20% of Taiwan's population will be aged 65 and older, prompting necessary societal adjustments. Nearly 40% of individuals over 70 indicated a desire for independent living, indicating a shift from traditional family dynamics. While more than half of seniors over 70 use smartphones, only 20% are skilled in using apps or smart systems, highlighting the need for better technological integration. Li Jianxing suggested that Taiwan could learn from Japan's "super-smart society" to effectively manage the challenges of an aging population. Nearly 80% of those aged 40 to 50 support the idea of AI robots assisting in medical care, and seniors over 60 seek integrated services that address various health and lifestyle needs. Taiwan Life Insurance's "Healthy and Happy Butler" initiative aims to merge health and home services to enhance seniors' quality of life. Zhuang Zhongqing, General Manager of Taiwan Life, stressed the urgency for Taiwan to respond to its rapid super-aging trend compared to Japan. He pointed out caregiver shortages and the declining interest in nursing careers among youth, underlining the need for AI solutions to monitor elder living conditions while ensuring privacy. Additionally, Taipower's Wu Jinzhong discussed the role of smart meters in tracking elderly electricity consumption to identify abnormal activity patterns, facilitating timely assistance from welfare centers. #AI #Taiwan https://lnkd.in/gQAcquCV

During World War II, American author John Steinbeck wrote the short novel "The Moon is Down" at the request of General William J. Donovan of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. This work of fiction was designed to inspire resistance against Nazi occupation in Europe. Translated into multiple languages and covertly distributed, it helped fuel underground resistance movements. Today, says one geopolitical expert, people in North Korea face a similarly oppressive regime, and a similar literary work could play a crucial role in empowering the North Korean people to seek that universal human right that eludes them: self-determination. Such a work could provide a framework for resistance, counter regime propaganda and offer hope, among other beneficial things for those in the region, says David Maxwell, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces colonel, vice president of the Center for Asia Pacific Strategy, and a senior fellow at the Global Peace Foundation, where he focuses on a free and unified Korea. https://lnkd.in/exc67KUr

[News Focus] [Lee tells Yoon that he has governed without political dialogue] Skeptics point to lackluster results of previous president-opposition leader meetings In their first meeting ever after President Yoon Suk Yeol seized power in 2022, main opposition party leader Lee Jae-myung on Monday told the conservative president that his two years in office has been a "time of dominance and ruling with the absence of politics." Ahead of their first official one-on-one meeting held Monday afternoon behind doors, Lee kicked off the event by thanking Yoon for setting up the meeting and expressed hope that it would become a cornerstone to present "new hope" for the Korean people, in a 15-minute opening remark. But the amicable remarks soon turned into criticism of Yoon's presidency, in line with the Democratic Party of Korea's parliamentary election campaign which was to "bring judgment to the current dictatorship regime." "I believe the public sentiment shown in the latest elections was a serious order (from the people) to correct national affairs," Lee told Yoon at the presidential office in Yongsan-gu, central Seoul. [S. Korea-US alliance won’t be swayed by US election outcomes: envoy] Cho Hyun-dong, South Korea's ambassador to the United States, said on Thursday that the current trajectory of the South Korea-US alliance, which has grown increasingly institutionalized, will not be swayed by US presidential election results. "One thing I can say for certain is that the axis of the Korea-US alliance is stronger than ever before, unparalleled by any previous period," Cho said during a press briefing held in Seoul. Cho underscored that the alliance "has already been institutionalized and deepened to the point where it is difficult to express it simply as strengthened cooperation.” The robust alliance is evident in the "multilayered high-level dialogues, strong security consultative mechanisms such as the Nuclear Consultative Group and the cooperation mechanisms in the economic, scientific and technological fields that are tightly linked in each field," according to Cho. Wisteria House Tokyo
Japan political insights, Oct 28, 2024 Through the general election yesterday, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its partner Komeito lost their majority in the Lower House. The current prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba needs to find some opposition parties to join the coalition to remain in power. No opposition party has disclosed its willingness so far. The process will go to a special parliamentary session on November 7 for the nomination of a prime minister. There will likely be a vote between Ishiba and Yoshihiko Noda, the head of the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP). Although CDP has significantly increased their seats through this election, they are not expected to beat LDP with supports from all the opposition parties. Why Ishiba's election strategy to attain victory by leveraging the “honeymoon phase” failed and why there is now political stalemate and uncertainty? Eight days after assuming office, Ishiba dissolved the Lower House, making it the shortest postwar election schedule. In a TV program in the evening of the election day, Ishiba said, “The debate focused on ‘politics and money’ instead of key policy issues such as foreign policies, social security, and agricultural policy.” According to an exit poll conducted by the Yomiuri Shimbun, the largest percentage of respondents chose “the economy and employment” as the most important policy issue. In addition, many respondents chose (i) inflation, (ii) social security, (iii) politics and money, and (iv) declining birthrate, as next important policy issues. In the meantime, the estimated voter turnout for this lower house election is expected to be around 53% nationwide. Since the turnout for the last lower house election was 55%, which had marked the third lowest in the postwar period, the turnout for this 2024 election will be even lower. Voters are aware that employment, wage increase and inflation is the most important issue. However, the election period was too short, and the media coverage is too focused on money scandals. These made it difficult for voters to see policy differences among many parties. This may have resulted in low voter turnout. Neither instability or uncertainty in politics helps the people of Japan, as Japan continues to face key challenges in the areas of the economy and national security. This trend is a vicious circle for the Japanese economy and politics. In addition to addressing key economic challenges for voters, building trust between politicians and voters seems critical for the future of Japan. https://lnkd.in/g_7PsnEn

During China's 2024 National Two Sessions in March, Wu Fan, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Deputy Dean of Shanghai Medical College at Fudan University, presented recommendations concerning the refinement of Huiminbao's functional role and the enhancement of regulation over the Huiminbao Specialty Drug Catalog. These suggestions were directed toward the National Financial Regulatory Administration (NFAR) and the National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA), signaling a likely future direction for developing Huiminbao's specialty drug formulary. It entails a significantly tighter integration with China's National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL) concerning coverage scope, dynamic update schedules, and negotiation rules. https://lnkd.in/enF2-R3n #China #innovativemedicine #drugpricing #accesspolicy #CommercialHealthInsurance

A Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator criticized former premier Liu Chao-shiuan for aligning with China's narrative on Taiwan's cultural identity during discussions with Chinese officials. Liu is accused of endorsing Beijing's propaganda that characterizes Taiwanese desinicization efforts as a threat to historical ties with China. DPP legislator Lai Jui-lung condemned Liu's actions as disgraceful, claiming he is being exploited in China's cognitive warfare against Taiwan's arts and culture. Liu, a member of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), is leading a delegation at the Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit in Beijing. At the summit, China's Taiwan Affairs Office Director Song Tao voiced support for Taiwanese cultural figures, opposing what he called the Taiwanese government's push for cultural independence. Song affirmed the idea that both sides of the Strait are part of one China and promoted the revival of Chinese culture. In response to Song's remarks, Liu stated that Chinese culture is a vital connection between Taiwan and the mainland. He expressed concerns over desinicization in Taiwan and advocated for increased cultural exchanges to foster mutual understanding and strengthen ties, while pushing for the values of Chinese culture to promote peaceful development between Taiwan and China. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Taiwan Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Cho Tae-yul, foreign minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK), in Beijing on Monday. "Recently, China-ROK relations have been facing difficulties and challenges, which is not in the common interests of both sides, nor is it what China wants to see," Wang said, adding that it is hoped that the ROK side will work with China to stick to the original intention of establishing diplomatic ties, adhere to the direction of good neighborliness and friendship, stick to the goal of mutually beneficial cooperation, remove disturbances, and make joint efforts to push for the sound and steady development of China-ROK relations.
