could today be the perfect day for you to read a chapter of my visual novel, soul of sovereignty? it could be.

“what’s it about?” two unlikely companions seek out the power to recreate their dying world in the all-pervading shadow of the capitalist church state

“that sounds heavy” it’s about a mild-mannered wizard dad getting his shit rocked by a sexy clown

“ok, but i’ve never played a visual novel before. i’m scared.” that is o.k. my friend. it’s just like reading a regular novel, except it has pretty pictures and also music by my dear friend toby fox.

soulsov could be real… life could be dream…

what say you, traveler…?

which flower is Loic's best seller?

the messenger fronts as a “normal flower shop,” so the bestsellers are basically all the hits with some exceptions. red roses are certainly up there. they probably provide the easiest opening for loic to say something strangely resonant which makes the customer’s gift significantly more memorable in the hands of its recipient

does lia have more of a knack for artisanry or flower reading, or does she simply use aspects of both in her own magic?

you will learn all about lelia in time. but she does go to school, so she does have to take artisanry classes. she is probably better than loic at it, in the same way that a kid who is currently taking trigonometry is better at it than her dad who thinks about math as little as possible

been reading and playing lots of fantasy stories lately with more of a focus on being cozy and feel-good rather than actual narratives.

thanks for setting up soulsov to be a story with teeth. love loic and ysme and all their flaws. they feel like people i could meet or fall in love with. hope they become everything they're afraid of becoming. promise.

thank you very much. that’s what it’s all about. i hope the rest of the story satisfies

i just want to say i love soulsov and have really enjoyed it more than i have the words to convey. i'd really like to sit here and type paragraph among paragraph to get across how magnificent i think it is, but i don't think my words would do it justice so like, thank you for making it and giving us this experience

thank you very much!!!

have you gone back to making music since releasing the prelude? does anything about your process feel different knowing that people love the music?

well yeah, i’ve been working on the music for chapter 2. it has not gotten any easier, but i am doing my best. if anything has changed, it’s that i’m attempting to make more “complete songs” before sending them to my collaborator to salvage, but inevitably my efforts crash into the “this shit is so ass” wall (note: i am there right now) so in reality not much has changed. thank you for the kind words, though.

you keep seeing this man on your timeline. you're wondering "who's that man." what if i told you you could meet that man. what if i told you you could rest your head in his lap while he recites poetry to you. you can't do that yet but we're working on it. in the meantime you Can meet this guy, and it's so easy. all you have to do is read for like an hour [you're getting up and walking away] wait

Soul of Sovereignty Prelude: All You Have to Do Is Read for Like an Hour

if you have purchased soulsov prelude: thank you very much. however, now you have to read for an hour (but it’s easy and fun)

Was Soulsov your first time making music? What was it like working on the soundtrack? What software did you use? (It's utterly gorgeous!!)

you’re very kind. soulsov was my first time making music with a concrete purpose, but i had been experimenting sporadically for a few years. as mentioned many times, i have no confidence in my musical ability, so it was very difficult, but i had fun collaborating with my friend. i use(d) fl studio.

speaking of presidents being killed by sorceresses on live tv, what's the governing situation like in the mosaic? i've gotta imagine that it's a puppet of the church or at least propped up by it, but do they have ineffectual elections or just a straight up divine right of kings ordeal

all will be revealed. but as you can probably tell from the prelude, it sucks

finally got on the sovv'd souls train and cracked open my copy... i don't know what i expected, but i think a game where a girl like ysme explodes the zeppelin of a bunch of fascist cops is just what i needed last night : , )

thank you for reading. i’m glad it brought you joy.

Hey! I recently replayed Soulsov and was once again delighted by how well crafted the worldbuilding and characterization was. You have a real gift for writing compelling worlds, and it's always a treat to see what you come up with.

One of my favorite moments in the prelude is the reveal of Ysme's weapon (not sure if mentioning what it is would count as a spoiler.) I'm not sure if it's been asked, but what inspired you to use that type of weapon in a largely fantastical world? I loved how the broken TV hinted at modern technology being present in this story, was it a way to subtly hint towards Ysme's weapon?

Keep up the good work! :)

thank you very much. i’m honored that you found it worth a reread. the level of technology in soulsov was probably most directly inspired by final fantasy 8. i say this every time it comes up, but there’s just something about a fantasy setting where a sorceress kills the president on live tv.

anyway, that particular choice was for shock value, but i thought it might have broken immersion without some expectation of a “modern” mosaic set beforehand. i’m glad it seems to have worked out.

watched a stream of soulsov yesterday, then bought it for myself. i like how a lot of the worldbuilding gets established through:

-eerie, ominous fantasy religion excerpt-

-flowery monologue-

-dialogue-

-dialogue-

-character casually drops hitherto unmentioned batshit setting detail mid-sentence-

-cute dialogue-

thank you. and thank you very much for buying the game even after you’d watched a stream. that means a lot.

i guess now is a good time to mention that when chapter 2 is finished in a few months, it’ll be released as an update to the existing prelude, so please look forward to it.

If red and gold pallisia are two different takes on the same meaning ["fire" as in warmth; the hearth versus "fire" as in destruction; a blaze], are red roses another take on the concept of "mending," or something related to connection/reconnection? Or, do they stand for something else altogether?

without giving too much away, the color-meaning scale is a little different for roses. you have the right idea that red roses are related to connection. they don’t mean love, but they endure as a symbol of love for good reason.

What voices do you imagine for Ysmé and Loïc?

the ones they have

just kidding. i don’t know. this question comes up from time to time but i don’t have any specific “voice claims” in mind. also, i haven’t considered voice acting seriously for my game because subpar vo is 1000x worse than none at all and i’m a snob with unrealistic standards

I voted for Phantom!Ysmé and all (because that's hot), but I admit the thought of Phantom!Loïc now has me reeling as well. I guess I never considered up until now that he may have the capacity to be as scary as Ysmé, but given how versatile flower reading can be... he could really mess people up under the right circumstances, completely of his own volition, huh.

And he's really tall.

whoa
