Nearly Half of Black Women Have Herpes

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

The latest news out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is very troubling, to say the least.

A jaw-dropping 48 percent of black women between ages 14 and 49 have the virus which causes genital herpes, says the federal agency. Blacks in general are more than three times as likely as whites to have herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) (39.2 percent vs. 12.3 percent).

Why is it so much higher among black women? It is likely that biological factors make women more susceptible to genital herpes than men, says the CDC. American women in general are nearly twice as likely as men to be infected (21 percent vs. 11 percent). Then add on top of that socioeconomic factors that negatively affect blacks' general state of health, and it's no surprise that black women draw the short straw when it comes to getting genital herpes.

What's worse, most don't even know they've drawn that short straw. Up to 80 percent of genital herpes infections in the United States are undiagnosed. "Many individuals are transmitting herpes to others without even knowing it," said John M. Douglas Jr., director of CDC's division of STD prevention. "It is important that persons with symptoms suggestive of herpes-especially recurrent sores in the genital area-seek clinical care to determine if these symptoms may be due to herpes and might benefit from treatment."

Sores aren't the only sign you've been infected, and many people don't even experience them. Redness and itching are other symptoms, and the disease can still be transmitted without visible sores.

The high rate of genital herpes infections among blacks may contribute toward the high rate of HIV in the black community by making transmission easier, says the CDC.

So what do we do? If you know you have genital herpes, you definitely should avoid sex when symptoms or sores are present. Remember that genital herpes can still be transmitted when sores are not present. Using condoms consistently and correctly, and limiting the number of people you have sex with are also important to limiting the spread of the disease.

For more information on the disease, check out the CDC's genital herpes fact sheet.

Andrew Schulz Responds to Kendrick Lamar’s Warning to White Comedians on Treatment of Black Women

On his latest album "GNX," Lamar said, "Don't let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that's law."

Yet another white comedian has responded to one of Kendrick Lamar’s most discussed lines on his recent surprise album, “GNX.”

On “wacced out murals,” the intro to Lamar’s album, he took shots at several people, most notably white comedians, saying on the track, “Don’t let no white comedian talk about no Black woman, that’s law.”

While several white comedians took umbrage with the line, including Gary Owen, many on social media felt like the bar was about Andrew Schulz, who infamously made some jokes about Black women while on his podcast, “Andrew Schulz’s Flagrant with Akaash Singh,” earlier this year.

The guests on the podcast were James Duncan and Fuhad Dawodu of the “Shxtsngigs” podcast. Not only was Schulz criticized for the comments, but Duncan and Dawodu were chastised for laughing along with his jokes instead of admonishing him. The two Black British podcasters released an apology in response to the backlash, but Schulz has stood his ground.

Watch the podcast clip below that caused the controversy:

Now, weeks after Lamar’s popular record was released, Schulz is responding to the line in a rather sarcastic tone.

On his podcast, he joked, “Nobody has respected women more, through art, than rappers. So I completely understand how a rapper could look at a comedian telling a joke and be like, ‘Yo y’all need to switch that s**t up.’ How dare y’all keep saying your wives are annoying?”

Schulz then jokingly started rapping stereotypical lyrics from rappers over the years that disrespect women, saying lines like, “B*****s ain’t nothing but h**s and t****s I beat my b***h with a stick.”

Co-host Akaash Singh also used this as an opportunity to take shots at Lamar, mentioning that he once threatened to take his music off of Spotify after it was announced that they would censor R. Kelly’s music.

That claim isn’t entirely true, since it was TDE CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith who threatened to remove his artists’ music from the streaming service, not Lamar.

Singh also mentioned that Lamar has worked with Chris Brown, who is infamously known for his violence against women.

“What a time to be alive,” Schulz also joked on his podcast, “where rappers gotta talk about comedians for clout.”

We Asked 3 Celebrity Stylists for the Hottest Summer Hair Trends

Professional stylists who've kept stars like Lizzo, KeKe Palmer and Queen Latifah looking great, tell us what looks…

By
Angela Johnson

With just about a month before the official start of summer, it’s a great time to start thinking about a new look to welcome the warm weather. But if you can’t decide on braids or bangs, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

The Root spoke exclusively with three celebrity hairstylists who gave us their picks for the hottest summer styles. Shelby Swain, Lizzo’s go-to for all things glam, Meechie De’Franco, who has given KeKe Palmer luscious locs, and Cheryl Bergamy who has created looks for some of the hottest fashion magazines, dished on all things summer hair.

Big Hair Don’t Care

Break out the metallics and fringe. According to Lizzo’s hairstylist, Shelby Swain, glam rock hair will be everywhere this summer. (Think: ‘70s chic).

Swain predicts the girls will be letting it all hang out. And if heads turn, mission accomplished.

“This glam, bubbly hair is sure to pop all summer long, simply because it’s chic yet carefree and effortless. It is such a statement and anyone wearing it will have the confidence to be seen and admired!”

Shelby’s 70’s Glam Rock Hair How-To:

  • Prep the hair with Sebastian Professional Re-Shaper hair spray to give it a little bit of grit. It gives the curls something to hold on to and protects from humidity.
  • Starting with the fringe, section the hair in two and curl little pieces with a ½ inch curling iron to create bouncy, voluminous curls.
  • Using Sebastian Professional Dark Oil to create a polished look, twist out the hair to make the curls even more bubbly and glam.
  • To finish the look, shake out the curls for more volume and use Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce hairspray. It locks the curls in place so the hair is set and ready to go.

Short and Sweet

Stylist Meechie De’Franco suggests starting off summer with a bold new style. De’Franco who has styled celebs like KeKe Palmer, Kim Whitley and Evelyn Lozada, predicts summer 2023 is going to be the time to let our hair down…and cut it.

“Last summer we were fascinated with super long tresses and baby hair. Well, this season’s trend is all things short & chic,” she says.

Meechie predicts pixie cuts, blunt bobs and fancy fades will be the rage. She even thinks we may see a mullet or two (in a stylishly updated form, of course). And if you really want your style to pop, she suggests going platinum blonde, radiant red or any fun color you choose.

How Meechie De’Franco keeps her tresses tamed:

All About Braids

Cheryl Bergamy says that as the temps rise, it will be all about braids. And the stylist, who has counted Queen Latifah among her celebrity clients, says this summer, we’ll see braided styles with even more creativity. “Jaded braids have been making their way through social media,” she said.

A mixture of different braiding techniques ( box braids, bubble braids, two-strand twists, etc.), Beragamy says jaded braids combine into a style that gives a punk vibe.

“Braiding or creating faux locs and using loose wavy/curly synthetic or human hair in between gives these styles an exotic, sexy look,” she said.

Styler Fixer

How Cheryl Keeps Braids Looking Their Best:

  • Use synthetic or human hair and a tail comb (with a metal tip) as a hair tool.
  • Keep the style fresh longer with Red by Kiss Styler Fixer braiding gel. It comes in 2 strengths, Extreme Hold and Maximum Hold.

In Loving Memory of MTV News: The Only News Show That Tried To Be Fair And Fun To All Young People

As MTV News shuts down, we can’t forget how it influenced a generation of young Black activists and fans.

By
Stephanie Holland

For Gen X, in the 1990s, there was one crucial place to get the most important news of the day: MTV. If you’re only familiar with current day MTV, I know that sounds crazy. But once upon a time, MTV News was the place for unbiased, reasonable stories on issues that young people were genuinely concerned about. Kurt Loder was Gen X’s Walter Cronkite. He’s the one who told us about Kurt Cobain, Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur’s deaths. “Choose or Lose” demanded that we pay attention to politics. Loder; John Norris; Tabitha Soren; Alison Stewart; SuChin Pak; Sway Calloway; and Chris Connelly gave us a diverse news team long before it was the trendy way to get viewers. These correspondents didn’t talk down to their young audience, they informed us about important issues and made it easy for us to understand why we should care.

No Fake News:

The facts weren’t skewed in one specific direction, they were presented in a simple, yet interesting way. Paramount Media Networks, Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios’ announcement that it’s cutting 25 percent of its staff signals the end of an influential era for an entire generation, as MTV News will shut down.

Those people who are doing everything they can to change this dumpster fire of a world we currently live in, took their first steps into activism thanks to MTV News. It started with Loder hosting The Week in Rock, but as the network and its programming evolved, so did its news division. As it became clear that politics was something the network could no longer avoid, MTV made sure to set itself apart from mainstream outlets by specifically tackling issues that its young audience cared about. Climate change, the environment, poverty, gender identity, sexuality and race were all prominently featured before the rest of the media world caught up.

Biggie and Tupac Got Their Flowers

When Biggie and Tupac died, MTV had the most balanced and humane coverage. The correspondents knew that these were real people who their audience idolized, so they treated them as more than just rappers who got caught up in a violent beef that went too far. They were Christopher Wallace and Tupac Shakur, young Black men who left behind grieving families and fans. For MTV’s audience, it was about their lives and legacies, not their deaths.

Goodbye Boring News

Personally, it showed me that journalism didn’t have to be this stuffy medium that only allowed old white men to have a voice. This is the first place I learned I could be a journalist and be myself. Great as they were at their jobs, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and Peter Jennings weren’t speaking to me and didn’t know what mattered to my generation. This is why Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton all made a point of doing MTV News specials during their presidential campaigns. The network had a fanbase that couldn’t be ignored and pushed aside.

I’m clearly not the only person who is a little emotional about the end of this era, as social media was flooded with people recognizing its importance and lamenting its demise.

Over the last decade, the outlet found it increasingly more difficult to find a real foothold in the new evolving media landscape. It’s no longer the only way for young people to get news. In fact, many of those same young people are now using social media to report the news themselves. It’s truly sad to see something like MTV News shut down, but its impact and influence will be seen in the activists and journalists its cutting-edge reporting created.

Lizzo's Launching a Gender-Neutral Shapewear Collection This Summer

The Grammy-winning artist is adding to the YITTY brand with a new, more inclusive line of undergarments

By
Angela Johnson

Since its 2022 launch YITTY has remained on the cutting edge of the shapewear market. The brand, created by Grammy award-winning recording artist Lizzo, makes leggings, onesies, tanks and thongs in sizes ranging from 6X to XS. And much like her music, fans can’t seem to get enough of the size-inclusive shapewear intended to promote confidence and self-love.

Now, as YITTY prepares to celebrate its first anniversary in April, the brand is getting ready to drop YOUR SKIN By YITTY, their new gender-affirming collection of shapewear, this summer. The YOUR SKIN line, which hits the market in August, will include pieces like tucking underwear and binding tops desinged for customers who identify as transgender, non-binary, gender-fluid and gender non-conforming, communities Lizzo believes are desperately underserved.

Image for article titled Lizzo's Launching a Gender-Neutral Shapewear Collection This Summer
Photo: YITTY

“We aren’t just making gender-neutral clothing. We’re creating a product that meets a real need. We’re way overdue for something like this. I’m finally in the position to do something about it,” the artist told Business of Fashion in an interview.

The YOUR SKIN By YITTY pieces are made with the brand’s famous Headliner fabric, a comfortable blend of 70 percent recycled polyester and 30 percent spandex. But they’re more than just eco-friendly undies. YOUR SKIN pieces are intentionally designed to be breathable and provide support in all the right places without the annoying lines some undergarments can leave behind.

YITTY has already proven itself a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The brand boasted $1 million in sales on launch day alone. And popular collections like “Nearly Naked” and “Smoothed Reality” sell out soon after they hit the market. The company hopes the pending launch of YOUR SKIN will help them increase sales to $100 million this year.

“You have to live in the future,” Lizzo said. “I don’t look to the left. I don’t look to the right. I look forward.”

Style 101 For Adults Who Want To Rock Spring Fashion Trends

From cutouts to crochet, we show you how to wear the spring trends and still keep it grown and sexy

By
Angela Johnson

If you let a teenager tell you, everyone who is anyone will be wearing baggy jeans, crop tops and platform sneakers this spring. At least that’s what my teen tells me every time we go shopping together. And she’s right, the stores are full of tiny tops and gigantic pants right now. But as a woman of a certain age, I refuse to believe I have to dress like a wannabe member of TLC to be in style. So I took it upon myself to do some digging to find some, dare I say, adult interpretations of these youthful trends. Check out these twists on some of the most popular spring fashion trends.

Geometric Cutouts

From the v-neckline to the perfectly positioned side cutouts, everything about the Satin Pleated Cutout Maxi Dress from Abercrombie says sexy. I mean, they had me at adjustable straps.

It may have long sleeves and a high neckline, but the Tempt Me Black Sheer Lace Long Sleeve Crop Top from Lulus is anything but boring. Whether you wear it over a tank or a slip dress, this piece will work overtime for your wardrobe.

Platform Sneakers

Who needs heels when you can wear platform sneakers? The Mayze Animal Women’s Sneakers from Puma pair great with jeans, leggings, skirts or even a suit. The options are endless.

Sweatshirts

Wearing a sweatshirt doesn’t have to always mean an oversized hoodie. Not that there’s anything wrong with an oversized hoodie. But we love the ruffled sleeves of the Janine Sweatshirt from Rebecca Minkoff, making it the perfect companion to your favorite pair of jeans or a skirt.

Bright Colors

Image for article titled Style 101 For Adults Who Want To Rock Spring Fashion Trends

Crop Tops

Just because you’re wearing a crop top doesn’t mean you have to let it all hang out. The Lindy Knit Top from Reformation is a crop that still leaves a little to the imagination.

Bell Bottom Jeans

Put your skinny jeans on pause this spring and check out these Patched flare jeans from GAP. But don’t get rid of them. They’ll probably be back in style soon.

Wide Leg Jeans

Is Timberland Creating a New Generation of Black Hip-Hop Shoe Designers?

Is Timberland Creating a New Generation of Black Hip-Hop Shoe Designers?

Just in time for hip-hop's 50th, the company responsible for that iconic yellow boot is celebrating its own 50th…

By
Angela Johnson

Originally designed to handle the harsh elements of a New England winter, Timberland boots have become a staple of hip-hop fashion. As much a part of the culture as bamboo earrings and Kangol hats, the impact of the classic yellow boot is undeniable.

This year, the company is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its original boot with a lineup of special projects, including a Hip-Hop Royalty Collection in honor of hip-hop’s 50th birthday and a program they hope will inspire a new generation of diverse designers.

Timberland is nurturing the next generation of creatives through a series of youth design workshops in partnership with creative lifestyle brand CNSTNT:DVLPMNT. Open to students in grades six through nine, workshops held in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC, Charlotte and Boston will teach kids the fundamentals of footwear design. Participants have the unique opportunity to learn directly from Timberland designers as they customize their own versions of the original boot. And at the end of the program, CNSTNT:DVLPMNT and Timberland will choose the best boot design, which they will bring to life at Timberland’s prototyping and maker space, The Shed.

The Root spoke with Chris Dixon, founder of CNSTNT:DVLPMNT and Timberland’s Senior Footwear Designer, about the work he’s doing to introduce kids with an interest in art to a career they may have never dreamed of.

Dixon, who has always loved art, says he started drawing sneakers when he was just 12 years old. “I sketched the shoes I wanted and added my unique twist to the ideas,” he said. “I didn’t know it was a path I could pursue until I was a junior in college studying graphic design.”

A win in a sneaker design contest launched his career in footwear design and now he’s leading the effort to expose more kids of color to the industry. Dixon says by exposing kids to careers in design, he hopes to show them what’s possible.

“I think the reason there is a lack of representation is because of the lack of real education exposure to design and creative careers at a young age,” he said. “It’s hard to be what you don’t see. If young students are able to learn what options they have with their creative or artistic ability, there’s a better chance they can start pursuing their careers early. That is why I try to do my part by sharing my personal story to show it is possible to be what you desire to be creatively.”

Dixon says the workshop markets were chosen specifically because the BIPOC communities in those cities have been instrumental to Timberland’s rise over the past 50 years. “This is a way for us to give back and say thank you,” he said.

While Dixon shares his design knowledge with the students, he says he’s also learned a lot from them, including not to put limits on his imagination. “Their curiosity brings forth so many great ideas,” he said. “They all show so much courage just by showing up and trying something new.”
