Task 1: Construction methods and work preparation

You work for a construction company and support the work preparation for the construc-
tion of a 1,000-meter-long reinforced concrete canal. Your tasks include earthworks,
sealing works and the construction of the reinforced concrete structure (ref. Figure 1-
for top view and Figure 1-2 for vertical section).

Name: ................................................................. Matr.-No.: ............................
c) Work estimate (30 min.)
You are at the time of the beginning of the construction works. For the controlling
of the construction project, a comprehensible work estimation has to be estab-
lished under consideration of the given boundary conditions. It was decided to
subcontract the reinforcement works for the canal bottom slab and the canal walls.
Use annex 1-3 to prepare the work estimation. In addition, calculate the contribu-
tion margin, the construction site result and the contract amount.
Below quantities refer to one (1) kilometre (1,000 m) of canal
Quantities earthworks (rounded):
Excavation works = 32,000 m³
Quantities blinding concrete (rounded):
Concrete volume blinding concrete = 2,250 m³
Performance casting (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m³
Quantities sealing sheet (rounded):
Total surface sealing sheet = 13,000 m²
Performance sealing works (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m²
Quantities canal bottom slab (rounded):
Concrete volume bottom slab = 1,500 m³
Reinforcement content bottom slab = 110 kg/m³ concrete
Performance steel-fixing (includes set-up time) = 16 h/t
Performance casting (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m³
Quantities canal walls (rounded):
Surface area canal walls = 9,000 m²
Concrete volume canal walls = 1,750 m³
Reinforcement content canal walls = 120 kg/m³ concrete
Performance shuttering (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m²
Performance stripping (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m²
Performance steel-fixing (includes set-up time) = 14 h/t
Performance casting (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m³
Name: ................................................................. Matr.-No.: ............................
General boundary conditions:
  • The awarded scope of works comprises the earthworks, the sealing works and the
reinforced concrete works of the canal.
  • No influences from the surroundings of the canal have to be taken into account.
  • The specification of construction joints between the sections are yet to be agreed
with the structural engineer and are not part of this task.
  • Soil condition: Soil classification 4 according to DIN 18300:2012-09.
  • The slope can be assumed to be sufficiently stable.
  • All concrete components are made of concrete grade C30/37.
  • A truck-mounted concrete pump is planned for the casting process.
