Task 1: Construction methods and work preparation
You work for a construction company and support the work preparation for the construc-
tion of a 1,000-meter-long reinforced concrete canal. Your tasks include earthworks,
sealing works and the construction of the reinforced concrete structure (ref. Figure 1-
for top view and Figure 1-2 for vertical section).

Name: ................................................................. Matr.-No.: ............................
c) Work estimate (30 min.)
You are at the time of the beginning of the construction works. For the controlling
of the construction project, a comprehensible work estimation has to be estab-
lished under consideration of the given boundary conditions. It was decided to
subcontract the reinforcement works for the canal bottom slab and the canal walls.
Use annex 1-3 to prepare the work estimation. In addition, calculate the contribu-
tion margin, the construction site result and the contract amount.
Below quantities refer to one (1) kilometre (1,000 m) of canal
Quantities earthworks (rounded):
Excavation works = 32,000 m³
Quantities blinding concrete (rounded):
Concrete volume blinding concrete = 2,250 m³
Performance casting (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m³
Quantities sealing sheet (rounded):
Total surface sealing sheet = 13,000 m²
Performance sealing works (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m²
Quantities canal bottom slab (rounded):
Concrete volume bottom slab = 1,500 m³
Reinforcement content bottom slab = 110 kg/m³ concrete
Performance steel-fixing (includes set-up time) = 16 h/t
Performance casting (includes set-up time) = 0 h/m³
Quantities canal walls (rounded):
Surface area canal walls = 9,000 m²
Concrete volume canal walls = 1,750 m³
Reinforcement content canal walls = 120 kg/m³ concrete

Task 1 Page 3 of 13
Figure 1-2: Vertical section canal (Section A-A)
Tasks:
a) Construction Method (35 min.)
Establish an excavation concept and prove it with the help of hand sketches. Con-
sider the digging curve of the hydraulic excavator shown in Figure 1-3. In addi-
tion, describe all work processes for the construction of the canal and prepare
informative hand sketches for the reinforced concrete works. Develop a crane con-
cept for the reinforced concrete works and draw a hand sketch.
b) Takt scheduling (25 min.)
Develop a takt schedule for the structural construction works of the canal. Use the
template in annex 1-1 for the bill of quantities and the template in annex 1-2 for
the takt schedule. Show at least three (3) takts. Calculate the minimum number
of formwork sets required for the construction of the canal walls and draw them
in the takt schedule.

Task 1 Page 6 of 13
Boundary conditions task b):
• The earthworks are to be neglected in the course of the takt scheduling and
run independently.
• The 1,000-meter-long canal is to be completed after 260 working days.
• The length of each takt section of the canal is 20 meters.
• A learning curve is not to consider.
• The formwork and concrete works will be carried out by your own working crew
(Crew A). The working crew works from Monday to Friday. The weekly working
time is 40 hours.
• Your own work crew (Crew A) also carries out the construction of the blinding
concrete and placing the sealing sheets.
• The placing of the sealing sheet happens immediately after casting of the blinding
concrete.
• Works on the canal bottom slab may begin no earlier than 2 calendar days after
the concrete is casted. The stripping period for the canal walls is 9 calendar days.
• The reinforcement works of the canal bottom slab and canal walls are carried out
by another work crew (Crew B). This work crew will also carry out the shuttering
of the canal bottom slab. The shuttering works of the canal bottom slab is not to
be considered further. Work crew B is employed on the construction site 4 work-
ing days per week. The weekly working time is 40 hours.
• The reinforcement works for the canal bottom slab can first start half a working
day after the start of the sealing sheet works.
Boundary conditions task c):
General boundary conditions:
• The working time is 40 hours a week per worker.
• The total construction period is 16 months.
• The earthworks are to be included in the estimation.
• The construction manager is assigned 50 % to the project.
• There are two foremen assigned to the site. The foremen do not work productively
on the site.
• The formwork is delivered one month after the start of the construction works and
carted off one month before the end of the construction works. The formwork is
rental material.
