Parliament Winter Session Day 4 Updates: Term of JPC on Waqf Bill extended till end of budget session 2025 by LS; both Houses adjourned for the day

Recently-elected Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as an MP in the Lok Sabha on Thursday (November 28, 2024). The MP from Wayanad in Kerala held up a red and black copy of the Constitution, which Rahul Gandhi has been displaying at his public meetings, as she took her oath.

The Lok Sabha on Thursday adopted a resolution to extend the tenure of the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill till the last day of the Budget session of Parliament next year. Committee Chairman and BJP leader Jagdambika Pal moved the resolution in the Lok Sabha, which approved it with a voice vote.

Amid an uproar by the Opposition for a discussion on the Adani issue, the Lower House was adjourned until 12 p.m., and later, for the day, minutes after it was convened. Meanwhile, a similar thing ensued in the Upper House as it was adjourned until 12 p.m., and later for the day, after many Opposition members demanded a discussion on the issues of Adani’s indictment, the Manipur conflict and the Chambal violence.

    The Trinamool Congress will focus on “people’s issues” in the ongoing winter session of Parliament and it does not want the proceedings to be disrupted over “one issue”, deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said Wednesday. While the Congress is vociferously raising the issue of industrialist Gautam Adani being charged in an alleged bribery and fraud case in the US, the Trinamool Congress said it will be focusing on issues like deprivation of central funds to West Bengal and the situation in Manipur.

    No Waqf Bill in Winter session, joint committee to seek term extension to consult more stakeholders

    The bill to amend the Waqf Act is unlikely to be taken up in the winter session of Parliament, with the joint committee set up to examine it set to seek an extension to present its report.

    Joint Parliamentary Committee chairman Jagdambika Pal said that he will move a resolution for extending the term of the panel, which is examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

    Opposition members have been seeking an extension of the term of the joint committee to listen to more stakeholders.

    Ms. Pal said opposition members should not boycott the proceedings of the committee over their demands.
