A senior judge accused of bias towards the operators of private schools has declined to disclose her personal connections, prompting calls from campaigners for “full disclosure”.

Former pupils who gave evidence to the Scottish child abuse inquiry have signed a letter urging John Swinney, the first minister, to remove Lady Smith, its chairwoman, alleging that she has demonstrated “thinly veiled favouritism” towards fee-paying institutions.

Smith has heard evidence that sexual and physical abuse took place at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College and is expected to publish her findings early next year.

Survivors have called on the judge to declare whether any of her immediate family members attended either of the schools, suggesting that this would raise a significant conflict of interest.
