AAUW Batavia-Geneva-St. Charles Branch names Student Writer Contest winners

The AAUW Batavia-Geneva-St. Charles Branch continues its 42-year tradition of honoring aspiring young writers through its annual Creative Writing Contest. The Tri-Cities seventh- and eighth-graders have been awarded medals for their winning entries in fiction, poetry and nonfiction from the AAUW Branch.

AAUW Branch President Pat Hendrix says, "In this technological age where communication by texting and tweeting sacrifices creativity for brevity, it is rewarding to see that many young people still seek self-expression through writing."

The winners are:

• Seventh-grade fiction: First place, Evan Bonnet; second, Lila Wojcik; third, Aryah Wagner, all of Rotolo Middle School.

• Seventh-grade poetry: First place, Vikhashini Ananth; second, Lily Autenrieth; third, Paisley Rojas, all of Rotolo Middle School.

• Eighth-grade fiction: First place, Zara Newman, Thompson Middle School; second, Abby Freedland, Thompson Middle School; third, Ernesto Bebe, Geneva Middle School North
