Bcs they kind of have a negotiation with some publishers. And during the negotiation progress, the publishers request them to take down the translation of korean novels. They said only temporary tho.

    Late to the party, but….

I’m sure that this is a twist on what we more commonly know as “Beauty and the Beast”. More specifically, this refers back to some of the origin stories that influence the story we know today, not the sanitized versions and most definitely not the Disney version.

Most fairy tales as we know today have origins that we would consider very dark and inappropriate for children. They weren’t intrinsically stories only for kids but were intended for a wider audience. Back in the day - like thousands of years ago when we have first recorded incidences of these tales - children weren’t as cosseted and sheltered as they are now.

Stories were meant to tap into deeper parts of the psyche and explore the darker side of human experiences. This is something that is part of what Jung called the Shadow (Freud called it the unconscious, but I’m not a huge fan of Freud and in analytical psychology I think Jung’s concept describes this better). The Shadow is the irrational and instinctive part of us that we try to suppress, because we desperately want to believe that we - both collectively and individually - are creatures that have elevated ourselves from being animals and have mastered our darker impulses. Metaphorically, we have conquered the beasts and no longer fear the things that go bump in the night. Jung posits that we have not but have instead tried to shove our fears and “negative” emotions away but that the more we try to deny them, the more they rule our thoughts and behavior.

You can take that as you will, but note that most of what we view as negative emotions and behaviors do have their purpose. Fear helps you avoid danger. Jealousy, obsession, etc. can help you ward off and cope with the fear of loss. Violent impulses help you defend against physical attacks by animals or people. As people get more “civilized” we get farther and farther away from the original experience of being tiny creatures at the mercy of the vicissitudes of life, but there is still value in acknowledging and exploring these negative things because they are part of all of us.

Anyway, most fairy tales provided a way for us to confront our fears and conquer them. The beast in the stories was the embodiment of the darkness that we all face, and through repeated telling of these tales we see that the beast can be defeated. Since we identify ourselves as the hero in our own tale, we can vicariously defeat the beast and master/harness our fears.

When these stories were commonly told, life was more dangerous than it is today (physically). Children needed to be able to protect themselves in a way they don’t today and the conception of childhood as innocent and carefree didn’t exist. Childhood didn’t last as long, either. Things that we shield our children from today - sex and violence - are hidden away from children so that we can create the golden illusion of childhood and tell ourselves that we’ve moved beyond our primitive existence.

Except, of course, this is complete bullshit. Children are violent, children are sexual. This is part of the experience of being human. Children are still curious about the body and the bodies of others, and children still use violence as a means of getting what they want and protecting what they have. (Tantrums are a form of violence). Whether they are psychologically capable of coping with those experiences or not is another thing. We spend so much time protecting the idea of childhood that perhaps we’ve stopped actually protecting our children. That’s something you have to decide for yourself.

The fairy tales we know today are generally sanitized versions of the ones told in antiquity but if you look back even a few hundred years ago, you can see how dark and primal the original tales must have been.

In Cinderella for example, the step-sisters were so eager to fit that glass slipper that they cut off their toes and pared off parts of their feet to fit, but we’re caught our because the shoes filled with blood. In the end, the step-sisters were punished in horrific ways like being put into barrels with spikes pointing inwards and being rolled down the hill. There weren’t any pumpkin carriages or bluebirds perching on fingers.

The Little Mermaid gave up everything she had for her prince, including her soul. Every step on she took on land was torture, as walking on shards of glass which pierced through her feet and up her legs. To top it off, the prince tossed her aside for some land princess who suited him better. No seashell bikinis or happy lobsters for her. Nope. The mermaid just turned into seafoam, since she had given up her soul the only mercy she could get was oblivion for all eternity.

There are stories which do retain aspects of the original elements. Hansel and Gretel do, after all, shove the witch into the oven to kill her. Red Riding Hood’s grandmother still gets slaughtered by the wolf. Snow White still dies from the poisonous apple (this one’s a doozy since in some versions it’s her biological mom who wants her dead because the king - her father - has begun to turn his attentions toward his daughter).

I’d link you to origin stories, etc. but I’m on tablet and my kid is pestering me. If you are interested in learning more, search for information on Carl Jung and Bruno Bettelheim, who both discussed the psychology of fairy tales in depth. I didn’t go into Bettelheim in the interest of “brevity” but he addresses the nature of truth and how it differs between children and adults. Wikipedia’s got some easily accessible information on the origins of fairy tales, which can easily lead you down a rabbit hole.

The main influence of Beauty and the Beast is the story of Cupid and Psyche told in Greek Mythology, though the origin of the tale is likely much older. More properly, the tale is called Eros and Psyche. Eros was the Greek embodiment of sexual love and Psyche was the embodiment of the human soul. Themes of the story include rape, divinity, erotic love, self sacrifice, immortal love, etc.

And the rose in the story symbolizes the sexual union and curiosity of the heroine, as well as the desire for the unattainable (godhood).

Sorry, no singing clocks and teapots here.
