How to Motivate Developers?
Using Maslow’s pyramid.
One of the most accessible theories on management is Maslow’s pyramid. It explains that motivation is a kind of hierarchy and that motivation levels are established in stages. This is true of life, and the professional world is no exception.
The principle is that you can only move to the next level of motivation if the lower needs are satisfied. And the higher you are in the pyramid, the stronger your motivation.
In reality, managing developers would also consist of satisfying the 5 levels of need as much as possible, respecting their order, except that these needs would have to be transposed into the developer's professional universe.
From my experience, here is a suggestion of 15 points that I have grouped into the 5 levels, according to my perception of what constitutes “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Developers”.
