Statement by Authors in Japan Opposing LGBTQ+ Discrimination

As authors, we experience great joy having our works out in the world to encounter many readers, while having a strong sense of responsibility to speak out against injustice.

In recent years, we have been deeply pained and troubled by increasingly rampant discriminatory rhetoric targeting LGBTQ+ communities—particularly transgender individuals—throughout the world, including in Japan. It goes without saying that there are LGBTQ+ individuals among our readers and within literary circles and the publishing industry. This issue involves each and every person connected to the Japanese literary world, such that it is impossible for us to be bystanders.

Accordingly, we declare our solidarity and support in strongly opposing all forms of discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people, including those identifying as transgender.

Literature sometimes portrays darker aspects of humanity, such as discrimination, oppression, and exclusion. However, we believe that literature should never further exacerbate harm towards those already marginalized, nor should it contribute to any form of violence. We call upon the literary and publishing industries, as well as our fellow writers, to educate themselves and offer their support in making literature open to everyone, including LGBTQ+ individuals.

We aspire to a literary world that does not uphold discrimination.
