Batman and Odysseus Heroes has been talked about for centuries and they all are different in a way, like Batman and Odysseus were from different times and places fighting different things. But a lot showes that they have a lot more in common than you might think. Superheroes is something we have all heard about and we and we all have our own favorite, but what we might not know is that a lot of them have similar traits through characteristics and journey. I'm going to be comparing the modern day hero Batman with the old Greek hero Odysseus. Odysseus and Batman are very similar in their adventure comparing the modern day hero with Odysseus and have many similarities between their characters. Bruce Wayne(Batman) got separated from his parents at a very young age. They both got killed in an alleyway, it became a new world for him where more crimes came into place. Odysseus call for adventure was the Trojan war, similar to Batman's call was to fight Gotham's cities crimes to redeem his parents death. The injustice and imbalance for Odysseus was to leave his wife at his …show more content…
But because of the similar traits it as relatable. Batman is famous through comic books, movies, and series on television. While Odysseus is famous through oral storytelling from Homer. Also in the Odyssey people among the trip home that they met have heard of Odysseus before, recognizing him. While some believe that Odysseus was real, Batman is someone that people know is a made up fictional character. The lesson in Odysseus story is that “man is not more powerful than the higher power” or “to never give up”, while the theme for Batman is “justice”. Batman and Odysseus goes through different journeys with different lessons, but their traits of what made them what they are and how the stories are built up is similar. So people do have similar traits in their heroic stories today as 3000 years
Have you ever wondered if everybody's favorite hero ends up having a connection somehow? Well when comparing Deadpool and Odysseus there was a lot more similarities than thought there would be. Deadpool’s heroic journey is more similar than different compared to Odysseus.
There are many legendary epic stories have been passed on from generation to generation in the Greek culture. Even though each story has different outcomes, every epic character has certain features in common. Odysseus in The Odyssesy and Oedipus in Oedipus the King are great examples of epic heroes with a variety of similarities. Odysseus and Oedipus are similar in which they both god-like men who are considered heroes because of their cautious ways and relentless tenacity. On the other hand, Odysseus and Oedipus also demonstrate their crude habits with their hubris behavior throughout their own prophecy. In addition to the similarities, the powerful gods play a significant role which drastically affects
Reading through Beowulf I began to compare it to the last great epic I read, Homer’s Odyssey. While the Odyssey and Beowulf are each examples of both historic and modern ideas of heroism, the acts of Beowulf’s hero seem to fit better within its context.
Both famous heroes from antiquity, Jason and Odysseus have much in common and just as much not. It has been said that The Voyage of the Argo, written centuries past The Odyssey, is an imitation or some form of plagiarism of the primary epic poem of ancient Greece. I like the other train of thought; it is more an acknowledgement or tip of the hat, so to speak, specifically to The Odyssey. Both tales center on a hero and a fantastic voyage. Jason was less the virtuous demi-God we see in Odysseus. At first glance, he appeared an unlikely hero. Not so Odysseus, who embarked on what, should have been a short journey home following the fall of Troy, but became an epic journey with many obstacles and delays along the way.
The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. The setting, events, and characters in each and every story may change, but the characteristics of the hero remain basically the same. Each person is usually made into a hero in a somewhat similar fashion. For example, many heroes begin as imperfect characters, and then begin some sort of quest which leads to them becoming a leader of what they are doing, and then the character goes through a
The new Marvel Movie, Black Panther, just hit the market and everyone is raving about it already. This movie hero from modern times shares the same qualities as a hero from the Greek times; the stories of heroes use the same concepts, just with different names and settings. For example, Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, shares multiple characteristics with the Black Panther. The major difference between the two is that Odysseus is struggling to go back home while Black Panther is struggling to save his home, but both concern the battle against injustice.
Since the beginning of time epic tales have been passed on from generation to generation as a form of entertainment. Even though each epic is different in its plot, every epic has certain features in common. The prime example of their similarities is their main character, the hero of the epic. The hero's behavior changes from the beginning to the end of the tale. Since the plot revolves around the epic hero, in most cases, they are made to seem God-like, or larger then life, in their capabilities and strengths. The hero constantly has to conquer major obstacles to achieve their initial and final goal. Usually the hero is tremendously suspicious of other characters intensions.
Both of these heroes reflect the cultures of their time, one is a clever warrior and the other is a loyal soldier. Odysseus embodies the values of the power of the mind and the glory of man, which was present in ancient Greece; while Captain America is a powerful but loyal American soldier. The pride of Odysseus results in his boasting when he blinds Polyphemus. This angers Poseidon, yet Athena admires the cleverness of the hero, and some of the other gods take his side as well. Captain America still believes in clear right and wrong, and serving his country; even though he is in a time when this does not seem to be honored by many in the nation. He is part of the past century, when America won major wars and came out as the strongest of nations.
Achilles and Odysseus are quite different in the way they view combat and take down their enemies. Achilles seems to rely on his physical prowess, often charging in headfirst into battle using surprise and brute force to overpower his opponent whereas Odysseus has a tendency to use his intelligence and cunning nature in both the battlefield and politics as he stealthily plans the demise of his unsuspecting opponent. “Gnashing his teeth with rage, Achilles leaped from his chariot, made for his enemy, and lunged out at him with his sword” (341). Even when faced with a seemingly invincible assailant, Achilles uses his anger and sheer power to overtake Cycnus and impulsively attacks his unblemished skin in the hopes to end his life. It is Achilles’ agile and finesse in battle that has led to many victories for him. Even though the reasoning for his actions are more simplistic and even quite animalistic in some scenarios, it is this godlike strength and vicious temper that makes him the physical embodiment of a vengeful hero and in the Greeks stories he possesses all of the physical traits a hero should exemplify. “For now Odysseus began to boil with envy and thought up a despicable plan to end his rival” (342). Odysseus is quick and decisive in his actions but he relies on his sly nature to defeat and overwhelm his opponent in battle. Odysseus is valued for his wisdom and fair counsel, he has experience in the real world and this shows in the way he manipulates and even plays
One shared similarity I felt stood out amongst both Achilles and Odysseus is the endless supply of courage and determination they show when facing unimaginable difficulties along their journeys. The physical and mental strength that each hero possesses is tested as they face each
Odysseus has no reason to save his men’s lives but for his own convenience. Finally, Odysseus is home and after a long journey in which he shows no heroic actions and yet proves to be nothing but a villain, he once again proves throughout his actions that he is a villain. Odysseus is finally home, on Ithaca, and is then helped by Athena and disguises himself as an old beggar. He proves then to be a villain by seeking his revenge for the suitors and maidservants that once betray him (696, summary). Another way in which Odysseus shows he is a villain is when he finally reunites with his wife Penelope and reacts with rage when she tests him. This reveals Odysseus is a villain because he reacts as if he was innocent and some way being betrayed by his own wife. Of course, though, he never tells his loyal wife Penelope about his love affairs with Calypso and Circe. In conclusion, Odysseus throughout his actions proves to be not only veil but a villain. He leads his men into trouble, kills the suitors and maidservants without mercy, and betrays loyal wife. This allows readers to truly see Odysseus other side. He was a villain and there is no doubt about it. However, think about his so called heroic actions and the way he made everything work out for his own benefits. He knew he was a villain and somehow still got away with
Odysseus is an epic hero because he is a skilled fighter. Odysseus showed how skilled of a fighter he is on page 562, “Every shot brought down on of his enemies.” This quote shows Odysseus being a very skilled fighter by not missing a single shot and with every shot he takes he takes down one or even two of his enemies. Odysseus is also showing that by being a skilled fighter he can think on his feet and shoot without a second
It is interesting to see how some folktales are similar to each other even though they can be from a different region of the world. An example of this happening is the stories of Odysseus and Sinbad. Both of these folktales have much in common but on is from the Middle East while the other from Greece. The way their travels are similar, how their adventures are being told, and how their personalities are alike prove this concept. These tales were told as entertainment and educate people about growth and perseverance.
In Homer’s, The Odyssey, I believe that Odysseus is a true modern hero. During his long and perilous journey home Odysseus shows many heroic qualities that help save his men from many dangerous situations. He first shows his Valiant behavior during the war in Troy, he cares about his crew and survives the war. He also deeply cares about the welfare of his men on their return trip to Ithaka. Odysseus is a hero because he is a courageous leader, a quick thinker and a modest man.
Written about two thousand and seven hundred years earlier, the Odyssey is still influencing modern storytelling today. Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca and protagonist of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey was recognized as a great hero of his time. He was known for his defining qualities of superior strength and athleticism, sharp intellect, sensual ness, and a thirst for glory. These character traits are still being used to attribute modern day fictional heroes such as Neo, Captain Jack Sparrow, James Bond, and Spiderman. Accordingly, the heroic qualities of Odysseus can be still be seen in today's modern day fictional heroes.
