[Chanel, Louis Vuitton see muted growth in Korea] Luxury fashion houses reported a slowdown in sales growth in Korea after years of upbeat sales that peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to recent earnings reports. “Consumption of expensive luxury products soared over the past few years, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. But, luxury purchases started to slow down last year as consumer confidence remained low amid economic woes,” an industry source said on the condition of anonymity. The two largest luxury brands in Korea, CHANEL and Louis Vuitton, were unable to avoid the downward trend. Chanel, the French fashion house, reported 1.7 trillion won ($1.2 billion) in Korean sales last year, up 7 percent from 1.59 trillion won a year ago. Chanel outpaced its French rival Louis Vuitton to become the best-selling luxury brand in Korea. Louis Vuitton Korea posted 1.65 trillion won in sales last year. 🌍 Sustainable Fashion Insights! In collaboration with #Uniqlo, our Assistant Dean and Associate Professor, Dr Di Fan has discovered the latest consumer attitudes towards #SustainableFashion in Hong Kong and Macau. Results indicate that 10% of consumers purchase over 21 pieces of clothing per year, and 20% wear each piece of clothing less than 10 times on average. The survey also reveals reasons of consumers not participating in clothing recycling. 22% citing inconvenient recycling locations, another 22% finding the process troublesome. “The results indicate that the impact of #recycling information from government and public organisations on consumer behaviour is significant. The future of Japanese crafts within the global fashion industry is uncertain 🪡🌏🇯🇵 Japanese artisans are faced with a tough decision; up-hold tradition and preserve their crafts but risk extinction, or embrace innovation and adapt for the future but risk losing their cultural significance. Among other regional challenges, traditional Japanese crafts like Shibori are caught in the industry's web of opacity and power-imbalances. The system "works to protect luxury’s 'Made in Europe' branding, which masks globally entrenched, often colonial Eurocentric power structures", preventing artisans being recognised for their craft. Li Jiaqi: The Rise, Fall, and Struggle for Redemption of the "Lipstick King" Li Jiaqi, widely recognized as the "Lipstick King," has become one of the most influential figures in China's e-commerce scene. Known for his exceptional ability to sell beauty products during livestreams, Li amassed millions of followers and enormous revenue, peaking during major shopping festivals like the "Double 11." The Eyebrow Pencil Incident However, Li's success has been marred by several controversies, the most recent occurring in September 2023. During a livestream, a viewer complained about the high price of an eyebrow pencil from the Chinese brand Florasis, priced at 79 yuan. Li's dismissive response, questioning whether the viewer had worked hard enough to deserve a pay raise, sparked widespread backlash on social media. Critics accused him of being out of touch with the realities of China's working class. The fallout was swift: Li lost one million followers on Weibo overnight. Ongoing Controversies This incident is just one of several that have tarnished Li's reputation. In 2022, he faced another significant backlash when a livestream was abruptly cut off after he showcased a tank-shaped cake, coinciding with the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. This incident fueled speculation about government censorship. Despite issuing public apologies, many feel that Li's success has made him arrogant and detached from his humble beginnings. His apologies were widely perceived as insincere, particularly in the context of China's economic slowdown, which has left many consumers feeling frustrated and unheard. Attempted Comeback and Uncertain Future In an effort to rehabilitate his image, Li participated in the television show "Call Me by Fire" 《披荆斩棘》, but his comeback was poorly received. He received the highest number of unfavorable votes among the participating celebrities, underscoring the challenges he faces in reconnecting with his audience. Our new journal themed collection on ‘Chemical biology of metals’ is now available!  This themed collection, guest edited by Angela Casini (Technical University of Munich, Germany), Hui Chao (Sun Yat-Sen University, China), Hongzhe Sun (University of Hong Kong, China) and Christopher J. Chang (University of California, Berkeley, United States) offers articles showcasing the ongoing interest in the chemical biology of metals. Recent years have witnessed significant advances in the development of new imaging probes that can probe the physiological and pathological roles of metals in biology and/or leverage unique properties of metal coordination chemistry and metal-based medicines. In addition, significant progress has been made in understanding metallo-medicines and studying metal-based catalysis and signaling in living systems.
