The race to the gigapixel has begun.
For a long time, megapixel counts were quite stagnant.
Most smartphones were in the under-20-megapixel range, besides the Nokia PureView 808 and Lumia 1020, two outliers. And some Sony Xperia phones entered the 20-megapixel territory with their 23 megapixels. Even the 2019 Galaxy Note 10 flagship was at 12 megapixels. Of course, the camera internals have improved (speed, sensor and pixel sizes, optical image stabilization), but there is only so much you can achieve with 12 megapixels, so the megapixel count had to go up.
Then, 2019 came around. The first wave of elevated megapixel counts came from China. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, for example, brought us 64 megapixels, which was impressive in 2019. Shortly after, the rest of the pack followed.
It is 2024 now. The flagship phones (Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo) crossed 200 Megapixels. Even entry-level phones like the A15 have a solid 50 megapixels. Apple is hanging around at 48 megapixels but that will probably go up at the iPhone 17 (a song with that name from 2016 comes to mind).
In what year do you believe the first gigapixel (1000 megapixel) smartphone will be released?
This poll will conclude after half a year to prevent voters in future from having an unfair advantage when the release of the gigapixel smartphone is imminent. Also, no vote changing. That's cheating. Think a bit before voting.
