A phrase Prophet Muhammad said 'Seek knowledge even unto China"

It's considered to be a fabricated hadith by Sunnis, and I've never seen it mentioned in relation with our shi'i litreature.

  Quote

With regard to the hadeeth mentioned, “Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China, for seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim,” Shaykh al-Albaani said in Da’eef al-Jaami’: “(It is) fabricated.” (no. 906).

It's very unlikely you'll be able to find a primary source for this specific hadith, but there are very similar ones in both our books and those of the Sunnis.

"اُطلبوا العلم وَلو بخوض اللُّجَج"

Imam as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said,

"Seek knowledge even as far as going to the depths of seas."

بحارالانوار 71 / 277

[Bihar al-Anwar]

It was also related by Anas b. Malik that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.

[Sunan Ibn Mâjah (224) and others]

ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): اُطلُبوا العِلمَ ولَو بِالصِّينِ؛ فإنَّ طَلَبَ العِلمِ فَريضَةٌ عَلى كُلِّ مُسلِمٍ.

The Prophet Õáì Çááå Úáíå æÂáå said, ‘Seek knowledge even in China, for verily to seek knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim.’[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 28697]

Thank you brother Qaim for this valuable information. These points were not in my information.

A friend of mine however argued against the Arabic word  بِالصِّينِ which is translated as China. He said this does not mean China.

صين means China, it has no other meaning in Arabic according to the Hans Wehr lexicon. The closest other word is صينية, which means plate, but that wouldn't make sense in this hadith.

"Even go travel to China at that time around was supposed to Mdynە Monaware. Go for the natural sciences, is that you go to China where you acquire knowledge and learn from there and bring these sciences. "This interpretation is not correct. Basically, the appeal of Islam and the taste of the traditions that come about science, does not match."

The above is taken is from "Misbah Us Sharia". where the saying of Imam Ali AS is mentioned which provides the Sibeen.

The translation of hadith :

And Ali peace be upon him said: Seek knowledge even in China, and is the science of self-knowledge, and the knowledge of the Lord Almighty. And he further said: The Prophet, peace be upon him said: Who knew himself has been known Rabb.

Wasalam

Good find! Contrary to popular belief, Misbah ash-Shari`a was probably written by Fudayl b. `Iyad. He, according to our rijal books, was a reliable companion of Imam as-Sadiq, and he lived in the 8th century. He does not give a chain to this hadith unfortunately, and he attributes it to Imam Ali. Still, it appears that he met many tabi`een and scholars of the earliest generation.
