What is FASD? With almost one in four pregnancies unplanned, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an often-undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder that is sometimes referred to as the ‘invisible disability’. FASD is caused when a developing fetus is exposed to alcohol. It is a complex disorder that can affect children in a wide range of ways, in combination with the many other factors that can influence any individual child’s outcomes. Alcohol can cause damage to an unborn child at any time during pregnancy; the level of harm is dependent on the amount, frequency and timing of alcohol use. Other factors that can influence the effects of FASD include the genetic characteristics of both the mother and child, the stage of the pregnancy when alcohol was consumed, the physical and mental health of the mother, other substance use and external factors, such as exposure to stress, violence or other trauma. Leading health authorities and researchers across the world advise there is no safe time for and no safe amount of alcohol that can be consumed if you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy or could become pregnant. Health Behaviors in Homeless Populations: Evaluating Interventions for Substance Use and Oral Health A review examined the effectiveness of health interventions for homeless adults with severe disadvantages, focusing on oral health and related behaviors. The interventions combining housing support with substance use and mental health services showed potential to reduce substance use, but no statistically significant improvements were found. One study showed success in enhancing smoking abstinence rates with nicotine replacement and contingency management. Interventions like Housing First were cost-effective in managing substance use. More research is needed to understand the impacts on oral health and diet.
