Britain has jumped up a league table of countries’ performance on tackling climate change, finishing behind only Denmark and the Netherlands.

A report found the UK was the third best globally, up from eighth last year, making it the fastest climber. Experts at the Cop29 climate conference in Baku said it showed the UK was a “loser last year, a winner this year”.

Labour’s plans to ban oil and gas projects, a green light for onshore wind turbines and the closure of its last coal power station were cited as reasons for the promotion.
