Carmageddon is the original freeform driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows!) equal points, and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines. The game features anarchic drive-wherever-you-like gameplay and over-the-top surreal comedy violence. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps.

This game is not without its flaws, but it is still massively fun to play. It comes with a Glide wrapper, but DOSBOX needs to have the config files edited to enable it. Once you do so, you'll be able to get the game in much higher resoutions than were available before by using the 3DFX version. The ranking system in game is based entirely on how many points you earn in a match, so find a good map that you can get a lot of points on and grind it as much as possible. You can unlock some cars through play, but when you finish all the maps in the game and 'beat' it you unlock everything, even cars that don't unlock normally. The levels do not confine you to one track, you can explore to your heart's content - assuming you don't run out of time. Even the semi-Stand Alone expansion, the Splat Pack, is included. Just remember, this is an old game with some early design ideas that didn't always work well, but the game IS very fun to play and enjoy!

What could be better than a cow smashed the windshield? This game is priceless. Home of my best memories from that time, Carmageddon, Blood, Duke Nukem and many others. Thank you very much. The best of the best!

Ah, Carmageddon, a game where you don't just race other opponents, but also try to destroy them, and run over hundreds of innocent pedestrians in the process. Wicked fun. And you are rewarded for all of this, which makes it even more fun. The game even lets you know how many pedestrians there are on each level, so you can make sure every single one is mangled.

There are some old games that I think have really good looking graphics, even though they aren't very realistic like modern games. Carmageddon is one of them. There's a grittiness and personallity to the graphics that new games don't have. The lower detail of the graphics also gives the game a little more challenge, as it can be hard to see things coming up at times (at least before you get used to the graphics}.

The game can be annoying at times though. I found the vehicle handling/controls hard to get used to as first. At least with one car, you can easily get stuck to walls, and have to steer into the wall to get free. That doesn't really stop being annoying. Also if you go too fast up a steep hill, you can end up launching off and flying way too far, and will end up needing to be recovered. These minor things don't detract from the fun though.

The game has some good music that goes good with the game. There some rock songs and some electronic songs. But if you don't like them or get tired of them, you can always turn on some Metal. Metal goes great with this game.

Carmageddon is a lot of fun. If you like games like Postal or GTA. If you like running over people, wrecking cars, and causing chaos, then you will like this game. If you haven't already played it and don't own it, then you should get it now. Or when it's on sale.

9.5/10

The 1st, the best. The classic DosBox version, now compatible with newer OS, new renderers like OpenGL and DirectX. Runs on every PC and still looks nice.

Ah... Carmageddon, I think many fans of this franchise got interested in the game through many visits to a friend or cousin who had the game on a pre 2000s windows computer.

The game also works on a steam deck, although I found the framerates to be surprisingly lower than expected at times, but you can watch a snippet of gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKokKyonMqY

Where pedestrians just can't walk away from your incoming vehicle fast enough and cows ♥♥♥♥ blood.
Welcome to the chaotic and murderous world of Carmageddon, where your opponents are a bunch of lunatics and killing machines, and secretly you are too during the events of this game.

You gain time by mowing the locals or hitting vehicles, so do as you please!
Combining insane power-ups, surreal environments and different ways to win, the game guarantees endless hours of violent and hilarious entertainment.

Max Damage features 30 vehicles and ten environments. The game also includes a Career Mode, an Action Replay Mode and a multiplayer mode with four types of events, don't ask me how many races there are to do because there really are a lot of them, and a good thing, this is a game that never gets boring!

Carmageddon is one of my favorite games ever. I have so many fond memories of it, it was so much fun. Back in 1997 it was considered very controversial because of its violent nature (which was exaggerated, even back then). Let’s take a more in-depth look if you ever want to give it a try.

The concept of Carmageddon is basically quite simple: it’s like a racing game, but also not really, because there are multiple ways to get through a level or race.
You start each level in a big open world (back then at least) where you can go wherever you like right after you’ve started a race (and you can cheat a little and press a button to start driving before the announcer is done counting down… and run him over). Among the levels are a street, mountain area and an area with a beach.
Anyway, you can either: finish the race by racing laps, killing of all of the pedestrians in a level (which is time consuming) or destroy all of your opponents. And the fun really starts with these last two choices.
The vehicles in this game are not just your regular vehicles, no sir, for example; they consist of a hearse, a tow truck and a monster truck, all with their own deadly attachments ((saw)blade, spikes, et cetera). And they’re driven by people like O.J. Stimpson. Pure madness. And fun.
These cars can be destroyed. Annihilated. Pulverized. Anything. They’re completely destructible and for me that was even more fun than running over pedestrians (which resulted in gore, and points earned). But almost always it was a bit of both.
Driving at an opponent at full speed, seeing parts of the car fly off or the car itself get dented is immensely satisfying.
At different times wrecked (‘Wasted!’) cars can also be stolen, just by destroying them. But that depends on the level itself and the car. I think all of them could be stolen (and naturally driven) by the end of the game, including an extremely overpowered cop car (Squad Car) that would take ages to even take down. But by then you should already have (almost) finished the game.
You start the game at Rank 99 and then you climb the ladder by finishing races. I’m not sure if it’s random or not; I never found out how to climb up to a specific rank back in the day.
Power-ups are also scattered through the levels in different kind of colored containers. These contain all sorts of zany power-ups like pedestrians being glued to the ground, getting zapped by electricity shot out of your car or turning your car into granite. They always spawn at the same place, they’re not randomized.
Also, it didn’t actually add anything to the gameplay - but it did add to the atmosphere - but I just want to mention the Pratcam. A camera in the upper left corner that showed Max Damage or Die Anna reacting to your driving skills. Fun times!

This pack also contains the Splat Pack DLC which was a separate add-on back in the days, containing more levels, power-ups and cars, if I remember correctly. So good value all in all.

Graphics wise Carmageddon was insanely pretty, with nicely detailed 3D vehicles that had destructible physics unlike any game I’ve ever played back in those days. The levels were large and had clear textures. The pedestrians were actually 2D sprites, made with different angles, and this is obviously logical since there can be hundreds of pedestrians in a level and PCs weren’t as powerful back then.
I think the game had heavy metal kind of music in it. The sound effects consisted of lifelike, but higher pitched screams for pedestrians and metal clashing into metal for the cars. It was quite realistic in a game-y sort of way.

Carmageddon still is to this day a great game, with no other games quite like it. Sure, it’s dated by now, but give it a try if you like old school games and I can assure you you’ll have a good time with it.

Carmageddon: The Racing Game for the Chemically Imbalanced.

Back in 1997, Stainless Games predicted how the world would look like in 2026: fatal toxins will pollute the earth's atmosphere spreading sickness among the population, multinational corporations will turn the oceans into yellow acid pools, and living in a big city will be a synonymous of a violent death.

A dystopian world indeed, and Stainless Games came up with a way to interact with this world: annihilate everything.

To kill for the sake of killing, men, women, children, grannies, pregnants, cattle, sheep, penguins, cops, prostitutes, miners and divers, their guts must see the sunlight, all methodically slaughtered, in the most creative way.

Because your goal in this new earth is to turn it into a vast altar upon which all that is living must be sacrificed without end, without measure, without pause, until the consummation of things, until evil is extinct, until the death of death.

The bad part is that this version unlike an Android port published some years back, hasn't been remastered. So you'll have to stick with DOSBox to run it.

This is the classic that paved the way for many racing games to come.
This is a game that in 1997 created the racing game sandbox experience that would become a staple for the genre only many years after.

The way cities are sectioned into multiple tracks, and the way it doesn't impose a single objective, the way you can change focus between doing checkpoints, running over pedestrians, wrecking your opponents or just exploring the sandboxes is so ahead of it's time that even now, almost 20 years after it's release and after the mist of controversy has dissipated, it still feels fresh and an achievement in videogame design.

That it's gameplay and it's itch can still be scratched only by itself even now, so many years after it's release and so many clones in between says much more than anything that has probably been written.

I am super pissed. Love the game, but cannot accept the fact that this 26 year old game which I ran perfectly fine back in the day on a 166MHz 16MB machine now is barely playable on a six-core 3.9 GHz 16 gb RAM with a 4gb graphics card machine. I installed the fan-made restoration pack however still is not right and even it was - that is a fan-made patch and has nothing to do with Steam (and GOG for that matter) releasing a half-assed version and charging for it. Can't get over the fact there is a free Android port that works flawlessly at 60 fps on a phone but we cannot get a commercial version running on a modern PC "out of the box". Pathetic. Works OK with dgvoodoo's wrapper but that's not the point.

Another edit: the 12 hours spent according to this review is 12 hours spent in trying to make this release work. Nothing more to add.

Masterpiece, I'd trade this for any modern racing game. Cars handling doesn't hold your hand, wrecking enemies gives you satisfaction and so do the occasional car unlocks, which are always exciting. They just don't make games like this anymore, like it wouldn't even pass the rating system most likely, in our current snowflake woke age. Played this back in like 1999, came back just recently and had a blast. As for this particular Steam release, it's fantastic, you can adjust resolution and keybinds, through just a couple of small tweaks. I had no crashes or anything, apart from occasional audio cut offs. Played on Windows 11.

P.S. You know the game is sick when it has Fear Factory as part of the soundtrack.
