(36 minutes) Today, one guy with little to no technical iOS knowledge attempts to rescue apps from 3 different devices, and as many iOS 6 apps as possible just days before 6's App Store shut down, and to install them all onto one iPad, the Nostalgia-Pad Pro.
The Sony Mavica is a curious piece of tech that seems unusual at first, but fits right into the short, few year period of time where digital cameras were just beginning to enter the consumer market, but flash storage was too expensive and too small (in capacity) for regular usage.
Though the film camera was still very much king, digital cameras did exist at the time, one of the earliest examples being the Connectix QuickCam in 1994, which interfaced directly with your PCs parallel port, however there were not many cameras at the time that could be considered a proper portable camera.
(26 minutes) Another 420 passes with no sign of the King of SSDs, so I decide to fill in by installing an SSD into a 2006 MacBook Pro. And also a 2010 Mac Mini because I needed to anyways.
Once again, I ventured out with the E-Bike and Trailer. Unlike previous years which were limited by various factors, this year I got the free time to hit nearly every street in my area, even driving by car to some other locations I wanted to try. Above is just one of 4 bike trailer loads I took back to the house, though I didn't overload the trailer like I did last year.
What you find is completely unpredictable, rich areas, bad areas, normie areas, it doesn't matter, it all relies on how long the item has been sitting, and how well it was hidden. If you find something good, chances are it's been sitting for 5 minutes. Welcome to Spring Cleaning.
(30 minutes) The most insane budget file server gets an upgrade. Every file you've ever created, saved or downloaded, at the click of the mouse (on Everything Search). The 16 (erm ackshually its 14TB due to formatting*) File Server.
For a while, we've had a broken Nissan Cube in front of our house. Don't ask why but there's nowhere else to put it. Over time it started to look bad to I took it to myself to wash it occasionally, but I decided to go further, and turn it into something everyone can enjoy...
And so, on Halloween 2022, the Nissan Cube Express was born!
In 2022 I was working on a project for aftersleep 2.0, a ground up write of a full PHP forum, but I never got around to finishing it, so here's one of my favorite parts of it, paintpost! I had intended for this to be part of the posting system, so it's not very advanced, but have fun!
(30 minutes) As proud as I was about the last DOS Machine build in 2020, it actually wasn't as good as I thought it was since the FIC PA-2007 didn't run DOS very well. Now the DOS machine (actually like 2 years ago) returns to its 2018 roots with a very special motherboard.
Ok everyone, you know the drill. Spring Cleaning 2023.
For all the past spring cleanings, the stuff I found was brought home in my backpack on my bike, or just by carrying it home and walking, and that meant that I could never travel as far as I wanted to. But this year, things have changed, and I now have a bike trailer.
But I know what you're thinking, you must have THICK legs if you can move that trailer, which I don't. I'll admit, I cheated. I used my friend's ebike, which was actually the best biking experience I've ever had in my life. But that's for a future page, let's get to the stuff.
This was one of the few spring cleanings that I didn't actually find as much on the first day as on the second day, but here's what day 1 had to offer.
In front of my house there's this wooden retaining wall thing that had been in the process of falling over for the past 30 years... and we hadn't really done anything about it because it hadn't fallen over yet, and even though it looked like ass, it was still somewhat structurally sound. The street view imagery above was from 2020, and looked somewhat better than it did by 2023, but you get the idea.
But one day, on January 29, 2023, I awoke to find it.. fallen over on the ground. I didn't think much of it, since I had been expecting it for the last 6 years, but opun closer inspection, it was evident that this was no natural event. Someone did this - deliberately.
(41 minutes) Merry Christmas! This holiday season, dvd3000 is unable to convert VHS tapes to Digital, but a surprise gift from... SANTA!??! -turns out to be exactly what we've been looking for for 427 years.
I like messing around with old web browsers, but I hadn't messed around with Mosaic before, because it ran on Unix. Well, there was Pathworks Mosaic on Windows, but it absolutely sucks.
So I pretty much forgot about Mosaic until I heard about Floodgap Mosaic which is a fork of Mosaic with much better OS support and rendering, which was originally created to serve as a historical simulation, as well as a light, basic web browser for very old machines.
And some more poking around on the web led me to this page of running a modded version of Floodgap Mosaic on OpenBSD, and I already had an old laptop running OpenBSD, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
There will be a blog styled archive soon but not yet
Bored or don't know what to read? Try to !
