Mozambique opposition cries foul as Frelimo’s Chapo takes a comfortable lead

With half the votes tallied, Daniel Chapo has more than 50%, but results suggest RENAMO is no longer the largest opposition party. PODEMOS, backing independent Venancio Mondlane, has accused the electoral bodies of rigging the poll to favour the status quo.

Results of the 9 October Mozambique presidential election announced by the National Elections Commission (CNE) show ruling party Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo comfortably leading the vote count in nine of the country’s 11 provinces, with more than 50% of the vote. His closest challenger, Venancio Mondlane, an independent, is in second while rebel-turned-opposition RENAMO’s Ossufo Momade is a distant third.
