'We're the only ones that can fight back': Why the federal NDP is taking a close look at the B.C. election

Singh said the question that was in front of British Columbians is one that all Canadians will be faced with in an upcoming federal election

OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said the initial election results in British Columbia are proof that the New Democrats are the “only ones” who can fight back against Conservatives and said his troops are gearing up for a similar battle at the federal level.

The results were so close that B.C. voters will have to wait another week before knowing for sure if the NDP or the Conservative Party will form government. New Democrats won one extra seat, but two ridings were so close that automatic recounts will be taking place.

Meanwhile, the B.C. Greens won two seats, putting the province in the same situation as 2017 when they held the balance of power and ensured the NDP formed government.

Singh — who represents the B.C. riding of Burnaby South — was asked to comment on the results during a press conference in Ottawa. He said it was a “tough election, no question about it” and that there would be “a lot of lessons” that his party would learn from.

“It’s one where people were certainly frustrated and feel like life is becoming harder and harder. We saw that in the results,” he told reporters on Monday.

Singh said the question that was in front of British Columbians is one that all Canadians will be faced with in an upcoming federal election: what kind of future would they like to see?

“The future that Conservatives propose, both in that election and for the future, is one where they want to cut your health care. They want to cut the things that you need,” he said. “What we propose … is to strengthen things you need, to strengthen pensions, fix our health care.”

“These are the choices that people have to make. They made it in this election, and New Democrats showed that we’re the only ones that can fight back against Conservatives.”

NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo, for her part, thanked all the candidates who ran provincially for the work they have done but also for “standing up against Conservative cuts.”

“We know that the Conservative history is cuts, cuts, cuts. We had a strong team in B.C. that stood up against those cuts, and I look forward to the results in just under a week.”

Over the weekend, B.C. NDP Leader and incumbent premier David Eby said it was a “hard fought” campaign, and that every vote would matter. He also said the initial results indicated a “clear majority” for progressive values and promised to work with the Greens.

B.C. Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau said that the Greens were going to play a “pivotal role” in the B.C. legislature.

But it was a historic night for the B.C. Conservatives. Leader John Rustad said “people were hungry for common sense” in the province and promised to take every opportunity to bring down a minority NDP government to get back to the polls as soon as possible.

A similar scenario is playing out in Ottawa, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has been championing “common sense” and putting forward non-confidence motions in an attempt to bring down the Liberals.

So far, the NDP has been reluctant to join the Conservatives’ efforts. While Singh said his party would consider each vote on merit, he also strongly hinted that his party would keep the government in power to make sure Liberals fully implement the pharmacare bill.

Zarrillo would not say if the election results in B.C. are giving her party an extra argument to wait a little longer to bring down the government.

“Right now, today, we’re focused on standing up for workers. We’re focused on doing the work for Canadians. So that’s what I’m going to stay focused on,” she said at a press conference to present her private member’s bill to end flight attendants’ “unpaid work.”

Singh said there would be “a lot of lessons” from the B.C. NDP campaign that his party would evaluate and learn from.

“But I think generally, what we’re seeing is there is a fight for the future of our country, and that fight is coming down to the vision of Conservatives and the vision of New Democrats,” he said.

Trudeau, Singh are similar many ways; wealthy, lacking charm, have perception issues.

They both have similar, insidious agenda to slowly, consistently phase out original European Wh y it es citizens, replace with Co l Our Ed people from controversial countries, many that are in ongoing conflicts or war

      Here's where there's a distinctive difference;

      Singh is pro Khaliststan independence movement that is prohibited in India;

Extremely violent history with that movement !

Singh watching results of BC election as a Federal politician that resides in BC, he's aware that most new immigrants, inexperienced will vote for people that resemble them rather than on political parties policies and candidates bio, etc

Logically, they're the primary reason election didn't go as Canadian born- BC born citizens hoped, expected

Reality, Singh, Khaliststan will NOT be established in BC or anywhere in Canada, EVER

Singh, should resign and find relevant employment endeavors

As much a Trudeau, Singh, disagree, then Singh seems to agree with Trudeau, it's obvious NEITHER have overall intention to acknowledge, represent, original European, original stock Canadian born citizens!

Between international aid, including to terrorist groups now being allegedly eliminated. Plus, international students, temporary foreign workers, refugees, Permanent Residents and ongoing various, expensive assistance for them within Canada, as well as Quebec, Indigenous,

( Protected by constitution exempt from charter), Canadian born why it es outside Quebec aren't remotely a priority for Trudeau, Singh!

Recent article on constitution and our perception of rights, make it obvious

To vote, it should be mandatory to know basics of :

      English, history of Canada,

      province, city you're in; Logical!

What is missed in the piece is the flogging the BC NDP took in this election. Eby should resign based on this election outcome. He had a significant majority going in to the election.

The BC Conservatives were barely a blip on the electoral map, and barely a party when the election process started. By mid-night on Oct. 19th they were and are running neck and neck in the seat count with the NDP who was far better financed than the Conservatives, because of the 57 seats the NDP held in the legislature.

Had the vote in one riding in Richmond not been split by a former BC United candidate this would have been a tie race for legislative seats.

Have the Greens learned their lesson from getting into bed with the NDP remains to be seen? Horgan the former Premier pretty much decimated the BC Green Party with the last confidence and supply agreement with then Green leader Andrew Weaver. One only needs to ask Andrew Weaver how he feels to understand how that went for the BC Greens.

If the Greens think Eby is any less a menace they truly are dreaming. Having watched the campaign Mr. Eby demonstrated he has zero loyalties and his only objective is to remain in power to forward his radical agenda.

Lots of conservatives lashing out... As a BC voter who is proud of our government that has acted with common sense and compassion and managed to win their third election in a row which isn't easy. The BC NDP has had good government, no scandals and been honest to the people. So conservatives, you can whine about Justin if you must but you have no right to complain about British Columbians choosing who leads us if you don't live in BC. That's my opinion.

Hey Pierre, time to rethink your strategy of telling the electorate that you're going to cut health care and to commend Jagmeet for pointing out this is not a good approach.

Thanks Jagmeet for your deep, deep analysis!

Singh going on about cuts Rustad were fact checked, the claims are false. But NDP love a good smear campaign. Sonia, Greens, would see all taxes doubled, no economic plan, she lost her riding. People voted against Eby, who turned the NDP into the New Demagogue Party. Appointed himself dictator acting outside of the legislative body, micro managing lives across the board, legislating rights away across the board, hidden top secret, enormously high salaries of his Sunshine List, secret agendas, no transparency to the people, responsible for more pain and suffering than any government ever seen, enormous hiring of civil servants, bloated, all on the tax payer dollar, bragging about creating jobs when that's all it was, the list goes on, and accomplishing nothing. Eby trying to call that democracy. Acting outside the Legislative body, in secret, should be considered a crime. Covering up one BC Housing fiasco, ordering his party not to speak of it, then his BCH Minister steals 11 million for his private acquisition of buildings. Eby and his gang, got caught on his lone wolfing the land act. Lies, and more lies, and making it all about fearing Conservatives, while Eby never takes responsibility or accountability for all of his failures and his absolute cruelty of those suffering. So even the more liberal minded of us, those of us struggling who could use an extra couple of hundred could not be bought, we had to take a stand, above all issues, above all else, took a stand for our Rights and Democracy against the self appointed despot hiding behind his spin, and smears, flip flopping when caught. Even if Eby wins, BCC's will make an strong opposition party that will do everything they can to keep the despot in check. Now that's Democracy. Rustad has a very good plan anyway.
