An “arrogant” German doctor has been struck off in Britain after walking out during an operation.

Thomas Biesgen, 43, from Heidelberg, who specialises in reconstructive hand surgery, botched the treatment plans for patients at two hospitals. A panel sitting at the medical practitioners tribunal in Manchester found that he should not practise in the UK.

The doctor, who lives in Switzerland, was reported to the General Medical Council for alleged clinical errors and negligence at Leeds Teaching Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, in 2012. Colleagues in Leeds were so concerned that they relegated him to the role of observer.

Michele Clare, the tribunal chairwoman, said: “Dr Biesgen [was] at times over-defensive and arrogant. He appeared to be full of self-importance and took every opportunity to tell how successful and renowned he was.”

Dr Biesgen said: “I practise at the highest level and have not had complaints other than one consultant in Leeds with whom I never worked.”
