Times letters: Telling schools to turn off music lessons

Sir, It is depressing to read that the head of Ofqual has suggested that specialist subjects should be suspended to focus on “core” lessons as a way of coping with staff absence in schools (“Two-week wait for tests leaves schools fearing shortages”, Jan 5). The implication is that some disciplines are second-class citizens in the school curriculum.

This is nonsense. Learning about calculus and covalent bonding is important. Yet our youngsters cannot emerge from the pandemic in good spirits without engaging with music, literature and the creative and performing arts. As such, these subjects are the fount of mental health and the fruitful appreciation of the human condition.
