As we face stricter rules regarding who can and cannot study in Australia, the education sector within the migration industry is bracing for significant downtime. One of the most critical factors driving migration is the promise of a better lifestyle, good governance, and independence and education has been a way to get migration outcome for decades. While I trust that the government has conducted thorough studies on the viability of these new policies, the inconsistency and rapid changes are frustrating to keep up with. It's apparent that while the policymakers have identified the problems, they have failed to hold regulatory bodies accountable, opting instead for blanket rules. This approach is problematic, as the complex and intertwined nature of existing policies cannot be effectively addressed by a one-size-fits-all solution. One key takeaway from these changes is the need for a more thoughtful approach. Blanket rules often overlook the unique challenges faced by different stakeholders within the education and migration sectors. The new policies, although well-intentioned, may lead to unintended consequences, such as increased unemployment and a decrease in the quality of education available to international students. It is essential for policymakers to engage with industry experts, educators, and migration agents to develop more targeted and effective solutions. By addressing the root causes of the issues and holding regulatory bodies accountable, we can create a more stable and supportive environment for international students and education providers alike. In the meantime, we must navigate these turbulent waters with caution, ensuring that we adhere to the new rules while advocating for better, more comprehensive policies. The future of Australia's education and migration sectors depends on our ability to adapt and innovate in response to these challenges. #StudyInAustralia #InternationalEducation #Education #migration

The real chokepoint in our education design is the high stakes, narrow assessment of the end of high school. Until this has been reformed, we will continue to be stuck with a system that does not release the creativity and multiple gifts that young people have and should see recognised formally. The goal is to transform education systems worldwide to focus on developing individual and collective capacities to support human flourishing. ➡ Sign the call to action using this form: https://lnkd.in/eJPh_VbD ➡ Share this post to spread the word ➡ Engage with fellow signatories and work together steps towards education systems reform. Major Updates in International Education! 🚀 The Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment (Quality and Integrity) Bill 2024 brings crucial changes to enhance the quality and integrity of Australia's international education sector. Here are the key updates: 1. Transparency in Education Agents: Providers must disclose relationships with education agents and details of commissions paid, ensuring transparency and reducing exploitative practices. 2. Domestic Course Requirement: Providers must offer courses to domestic students for two consecutive years before registering to provide courses to overseas students. 3. Automatic Registration Cancellation: Providers not delivering courses to overseas students for 12 consecutive months will have their registration automatically cancelled. 4. Managed Growth: The Minister can suspend the processing of new provider registrations or course additions for up to 12 months to address integrity issues. 5. Student Enrolment Caps: Limits on the number of overseas students that providers can enroll ensure sustainable growth and quality education. 6. Enhanced Provider Scrutiny: Providers under investigation for specified offenses may have their registration automatically suspended to reinforce sector integrity. These changes aim to safeguard the interests of overseas students, maintain high education standards, and uphold Australia's reputation as a top destination for international education. https://lnkd.in/gvUJq6Kf

Best to all teachers out there today! The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2024 conducted annually with students in schools in Australian schools for those in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 shows that over 30% of learners do not meet the expected literacy and numeracy benchmarks. Up front I will declare that I am not a supporter of these tests, that have as their purpose to identify and share with schools/teachers, areas for improvement - as if teachers are not aware and not continuously endeavouring to improve the learning of their students. There are countries that don’t participate in such tests at all and teachers, learners and schools in those countries seem to survive ok. The priority in these places is on encouraging and supporting each learner to acquire, achieve and advance in their learning and to enjoy the learning process along the way. Learners are still expected to attain results, but teachers as professionals, are acknowledged as being in the best position to effectively monitor and assess learner performance and address learning issues if and as they arise. A last reflection or 2 - perhaps we might also reassess the necessity of teachers being expected to address a whole host of ‘other’ areas that have crept into the curriculum at the expense of time to consolidate these key foundation skills, which by the way cross discipline boundaries! #teachers #students #learning #tests #NAPLAN #learners #literacy #numeracy

It's always a pleasure to contribute an article for Australian Council for Educational Leaders - ACEL's quarterly journal - The Australian Educational Leader. Issue 2 for 2024 was released today and it is focused on leading effective teams. In my article, which is based off an earlier publication of mine on PLCs in the Journal of Education, I propose a framework to think about effective PLC operation in schools. Using the framework enables targeted insights into how school leaders can best support teachers to engage in collaborative reflective practice, engendering the goal of enhancing their professional learning in and through PLCs as a conduit for improving students’ learning outcomes. #schoolleadership #educationalleadership #PLCs #schoolimprovement

To all colleagues in the Education Industry, I encourage your support for this vital petition. Link: https://chng.it/cLTyv6MbRH We urgently appeal to the Australian Parliament to formally recognize the critical contributions international students make to our economy and society. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, these students have been indispensable in alleviating labor shortages across essential sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, the NDIS, and tourism. Their presence has not only helped stabilize our economy during challenging times but also ensured the continuity of vital services relied upon by millions of Australians. However, the ESOS Amendment Bill 2024 poses a significant threat to these contributions, with the potential to severely impact Australia's international education sector—our second-largest export industry—and jeopardize both economic stability and employment. #SaveTheIndustry #SaveJobs

Many educators think that Toddle - Your Teaching Partner is a system for IB schools. It's not, it is a system for any thinking school that wants a holistic learning management system and can be applied across curriculum, ACARA, CCSS, NGSS, Cambridge, English National Curriculum, Canadian, or any national/hybrid curriculum. The benefit for IB schools is that they can select the planning structure that they need to be successful on any or all of the IB programmes. And it supports collaboration well. The platform is fully licensed to support the IB frameworks and required reference documents are available on the platform. The benefits for any school are the visual presentation, the intuitive platform, the reduction in teacher workload, the reduction in the number of platforms that students/teachers/parents need to learn. It really is 'one stop shopping' for thinking schools who want a complete LMS. Schools who have to experience multiple inspections/evaluations/accreditations by different bodies find it particularly useful. Don't be shy to take a look! https://www.toddleapp.com/

Last month I joined the Matific Leadership Practices for Educators webinar where Dr Paul Browning OAM was the speaker. It was insightful to learn more about how to be a leader in the education space and I am excited to take what I learnt back to ithrive.school People often wonder how they can continue to grow and develop if they cannot afford to attend big conferences and events. My answer is simple: broaden your criteria for meaningful development! As much as I enjoy a big in-person conference, a free online webinar is a more accessible option for regular growth. Watching Youtube videos, connecting with mentors and experts and reading books also lead to expanding perspectives and development. Remember, there is something to be learnt from EVERY person and EVERY interaction. Shift your mindset when engaging with people and see how your world starts to open up! #LeadershipDevelopment #EducationLeadership #ProfessionalGrowth #LifelongLearning #EducationalWebinars #OnlineLearning #ContinuousImprovement #Mentorship #GrowthMindset #EdTech #LearningEveryday #TeacherDevelopment #WebinarLearning #Inspiration #PersonalDevelopment

All #students (and their #teachers) have the right to be #safe at #school. However, recent #PISA data show that some Australian students don't always feel safe at school, especially outside the classroom. In this article, published today by Teacher Magazine, I provide an overview of practical ways to enhance safety across the school! While PISA data can help schools identify important areas for improvement, it is important to recognise that the data don’t tell the whole story. While students reported feeling less safe in areas of the school outside of the classroom, we don’t know why. When utilising PISA data to inform a new approach, practice, initiative or program in your school setting, school-specific surveys or discussions with students to gather more information about students’ perceptions of their safety would be a valuable addition. If students report feeling unsafe, it is important to identify why and then use this information to develop contextually appropriate and culturally responsive interventions to enhance safety that address the core reasons why students feel unsafe.
