In a wide-ranging discussion (https://lnkd.in/gDqpCQjN) about education transformation with Ishardita Pambudi Tama, I developed a case for transforming education from two angles. The first angle is the changing learning landscape (think about students learning from YouTube or using ChatGPT). The second angle is the changing societal needs (think about new challenges we need to address). Ishardita Pambudi Tama shared about the how University of Brawijaya has supported academics in preparing courses using sound pedagogical principles. Such support is great. I propose going even further, i.e., to support Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as an avenue for academics to develop an evidence-based teaching practice that can be shared with a wider community. I further elaborated the benefits of SoTL. The talk was in Bahasa Indonesia. The auto-subtitle in English is accurate enough. I look forward to sharing more about my research in tapping the potential of #AI in pedagogy in other opportunities and learning from other academics, in the true spirit of SoTL.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
【#PolyU welcomes 2024 Policy Address measures on #education and #innovation & #technology development】 Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU, said that the University fully supports the Government’s initiatives to promote Chinese culture. The Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture was launched last year and the ‘PolyU Chinese Culture Festival’ was kick-started in March this year to strengthen pride and a sense of belonging to the Nation among the younger generation and contribute to Hong Kong’s development into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. PolyU is pleased that the Government has reserved land in the Northern Metropolis for the development of Northern Metropolis University Town and supports the creation of a third #medicalschool by local universities. To tackle the challenges of an aging population and rising chronic disease rates, Hong Kong needs the third medical school to cultivate more clinical medical talents. PolyU is actively preparing the proposal for establishing the medical school. With PolyU’s strong background in health science education and research, the University is well-equipped to expand training for medical students, becoming a comprehensive training hub for medical and healthcare professionals. It is believed that this new medical school will stand out from the existing two, making significant contributions to society. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, said that the University supports the Government’s establishment of the Committee on Education, Technology, and Talents to coordinate and promote the integrated development of these areas and to promote Hong Kong as an international hub for high‑calibre talents. PolyU is committed to recruiting outstanding academics and researchers globally to engage in cutting-edge research, contributing to the Nation’s technological self-reliance and high-quality development. The University continually innovates its curricula to prepare future-ready professionals for advancements in emerging technologies. This year, PolyU established the new Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and next year, the University will launch the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, focused on the AI era to meet the growing market demand for talent in these fields. To support the Government’s initiative to promote the low-altitude economy (LAE) as a growth engine for new quality productive forces, PolyU is establishing a research centre for LAE to explore viable solutions for developing this sector in Hong Kong, supporting the smart city development. PolyU’s research teams have extensive expertise in technologies related to unmanned aerial vehicles, including precise control and reliable positioning. Additionally, the University will launch an MSc programme in LAE next year to nurture talent for future industrial development. Blended Learning & MOOCs: Key Points What is Blended Learning? Blended learning combines in-person teaching with online activities, ideally making online learning about 30-79% of total course time. This flexible setup supports personalized learning. What are MOOCs in Blended Learning? MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are free, open-access courses. In blended learning, they add extra learning resources—like video lectures and online discussions—allowing students to learn at their own pace. Benefits of Using MOOCs: MOOCs add flexibility, keeping students engaged with interactive content and giving 24/7 access to materials. They also introduce new teaching styles and global perspectives. Student Perception: Students generally respond well to MOOCs in blended learning, valuing the flexibility and richer learning experience. Challenges for Students: Some students struggle with time management and the self-discipline needed for a flexible learning environment. Challenges for Instructors: Instructors often face a heavier workload managing both online and offline components and may need support with online teaching tools. Solutions: Institutions can offer training for instructors, while students benefit from clear guidance, time management tips, and chances for online and offline interaction. Future Research: Future studies could explore the right balance between in-person and online activities, strategies to increase engagement, and the long-term impact on learning outcomes. #TeachingEnglish #TESOL #TEFL #CELTA #English #MOOC #BlendedLearning #OnlineLearning

How AI can transform our education? I has the opportunity to have an in-depth discussion on how AI create impact on education in an interview with Unwire.hk. Winnie and I explored how AI is transforming—or has the potential to transform—the educational landscape. I am optimistic about the role of AI in revolutionizing how students learn and develop literacy skills. It is crucial that teachers shift from merely transferring knowledge to facilitating the development of higher-order and complex thinking skills in students. https://lnkd.in/gaEackkZ

A personal highlight of the Times Higher Education Asia Universities Summit was a plenary conversation with Tieniu Tan, Chair of the University Council at China's Nanjing University - on student success. Professor Tan is a highly decorated scholar and a leading expert on Artificial Intelligence, so it was good to hear about how the university is adopting teaching for the digital age, with a new compulsory core course for all first year students on #AI and with a fresh focus on closer cooperation between the university and industry. A major theme of the event was the importance of teaching values and integrity - in an age of misinformation and disinformation. At Nanjing, Professor Tan explained, students received two transcripts – one for academic performance and one for their “integrity”, which measures their soft skills. “The most important soft skill is virtue,” said Professor Tan. “I believe students with virtue and talent are [a] quality product…Students with talent and no virtue [are] a poisonous product.” THE's report on Nanjing's compulsory AI module is here: https://lnkd.in/eD4JvfSR THE's Helen Packer's write-up of the interview, and much more from the Summit, is here: https://lnkd.in/eApN2uKF During the event, Professor Tan confirmed China's drive to promote international scientific and educational cooperation and cultural exchanges and international scientific and technological collaborations. Times Higher Education very much looks forward to collaboration - thanks to great worth from Simone Dilena, Sophia LI and our APAC team. #THEAsia #AI #StudentSuccess #graduateemployability #AIeducation

Our paper, spearheaded by Md Nasim Adnan Charles Sturt University and accessible at [full paper: https://lnkd.in/gEGrKA3C, pre-print: https://lnkd.in/gP-amvJh, You Tube video: https://lnkd.in/gST44Zxp, another You Tube video: https://lnkd.in/g8bkz2pu], presents a framework for knowledge discovery, which is also applied to real datasets concerning dimentia and heart disease patients. Some interesting trends discovered are as follows: * From the Dimetia dataset: Trend 1: The dataset reveals a higher percentage of dementia patients among individuals with lower socio-economic status. It remains unclear whether this pattern is unique to this dataset or reflects a broader trend. Further investigation could shed more light on this observation. Trend 2: Analysis indicates that the percentage of non-demented individuals is greater in populations with higher educational attainment compared to those with lower levels of education. Similarly the pecentage of demented patients is way lower in populations with higher educational attainment. * From the Heart Disease dataset: Trend 3: If the heart gets enough blood flow under stress, there is lower chance of having heart disease. The primary contribution of this paper centers on a framework for knowledge discovery. It's common for individuals to utilize an ensemble of decision trees over a single tree to uncover a large number of logic rules characterized by high support, confidence, lift, and other metrics. However, with an increasing number of trees, the volume of logic rules can become too substantial to manage effectively. This paper introduces a method for filtering out the most useful rules, thereby facilitating effective knowledge discovery and enabling a comprehensive 360-degree analysis. This is perhaps worth a read, especially if you're interested in analyzing a dataset to identify trends and derive meaningful insights from the data. #CharlesSturtResearch

📰 Great News❕
Researchers from Coventry University, led by Petros Lameras, are transforming education in northern Vietnam by using artificial intelligence (AI) to assist teachers in rural areas. In regions with limited technology and training, the GameAid project provides educators with a game-based approach to integrating generative AI into their teaching methods. Lameras emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “We are not just enhancing skills but fundamentally changing how educators engage with technology in the classroom.” The project addresses a digital gap often seen between rural and urban communities in Vietnam, where urban educators typically have better access to technology and resources. Generative AI, capable of creating diverse content like text, images, and audio from user prompts, holds the potential to bridge these disparities, offering educational resources and support to underserved teachers. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen from Hanoi University of Science and Technology also plays a key role in the initiative. Nguyen highlighted that GameAid provides simple guidelines for incorporating AI into lesson planning, helping foster innovation and improve equal access to quality education in rural areas. “It focuses on reducing the educational gap between urban and rural areas in Vietnam, promoting equal access to new learning opportunities,” Nguyen remarked. 𝗔𝗜-𝗞𝗮𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗢𝗘 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 I’m incredibly thankful and honoured to share that the Kahoot Generator AI-bot, that I developed on Pair, was recently featured by Minister Chan Chun Sing at the Workplan Seminar 2024! In Minister Chan’s speech, he summarised the function of the AI bot. “𝘖𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘺, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘒𝘢𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘻. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘯 10 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵.” Indeed, Kahoot Generator is aimed at using AI to create Kahoot quizzes in a fraction of the time to help reduce teacher workload so teachers can focus more on teaching, learning, and engaging our students. It’s been a rewarding journey developing this tool, and I’m happy to see it spurring innovation across the educational fraternity. If you’re an MOE teacher, you can access the bot here https://lnkd.in/gYw2zvYX For those interested in how it works, I’ve put together a simple guide that walks through its usage and outlines how you can build similar bots on Pair too. Feel free to check it out: https://lnkd.in/gZEeB6wQ I am also experimenting with other uses for Pair Bots, for example - Exam paper generator, Lab requisition form generator etc so if you are interested in bouncing ideas off each other and building together, feel free to reach out! *Apologies to our HQ colleagues, Pair restricts me from sharing with outside agencies. However, the prompts used are shared openly in the article so feel free to copy and recreate the bot if you find this useful to you. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me in this — let’s continue driving innovation in education! 🙏 #AI #Education #WorkplanSeminar2024 #EdTech #Innovation

I commend the initiative highlighted in this article regarding Ming Ai Ma On Shan Secondary School's comprehensive nursing program. By fostering a nurturing environment for students to develop their medical and healthcare skills, the school is making significant strides in addressing the future needs of our society. This program not only prepares students for careers in nursing but also instills a sense of responsibility towards personal health and wellness, which is crucial in today's fast-paced world. Integrating health education at a young age can have a profound impact on students' lifelong fitness and wellness habits. Such initiatives are vital in promoting a holistic approach to health, combining physical fitness with medical knowledge. As a physical trainer, I believe this approach will empower students to lead healthier lives and encourage them to maintain physical fitness, which is essential for overall well-being. https://lnkd.in/gzHiJsXx #4UInclusiveFitness #HealthEducation #NursingProgram #StudentWellness #HolisticHealth #PhysicalFitness #FutureHealthcare #MingAiMaOnShan #YouthEmpowerment #HealthyLifestyle #FitnessAndWellness
