Tribe Information

Kuskus is a south Payuan village in Mudan Township. The word Kuskus has the meaning of weeding, symbolizing how the tribespeople weed and plow their land diligently every day. In the early days, Kuskus engaged in farming and hunting in exchange for fabric from the Hakka people to produce their clothing. Consequently, their traditional clothing is different from other Payuan tribes, with the main colors of red, blue, and white emanating a touch of Hakka style, hence they have been given the moniker of the "Ruby of the South Payuan". During the Japanese occupation period, Kuskus was the administration and education center of Mudan Township, hence public schools and police stations were established here. The relics of a Japanese Shinto shrine remain in Kuskus today, and there are plenty of native Taiwan Melastoma flowers in the area. During the flowering period of April to June every year, the pink and purple blossoming Taiwan Melastoma flowers adorn the village with stunning colors.
