My team (Neisha, Jaycob, and I) have travelled 3,524 km’s to reach Alice Springs last week where we led human centred design workshops with community members connected to Carers NT. When in town we caught up with Henly Taka. For those that do not know him, Henley moved to Australia from Papua New Guinea. He is currently working as the CEO of the Wanta Aboriginal Corporation (Wanta). Wanta aims to support Indigenous youth in remote communities by focusing on various areas crucial for their development and wellbeing. It was great catching up with Henly, we spoke about shared resources and joint community collaborations, and the needs we see when working in remote communities across Australia. Our Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander youths are so lucky to have the support of such an amazing organisation that has local staff on the ground in communities to support the big needs out there. We spoke at length over the common strategies we have faced in collaborations when working with community. Here are some insights my team and I brainstormed: ✅Cultural Consultation Is Necessary: Investing in Cultural Consultation to support program adaptations tailored for youth is essential in providing culturally safe content led by community for community. ✅Find Common Ground: It's crucial to meet the community kids where they are and understand their interests. Building common ground is essential for establishing rapport. ✅Flexibility in Lesson Plans: When working with community kids, you will likely need to co-design a new approach to learning. The more impute that community can have in the lesson plan designs with programs, the more invested interest there will be. ✅Set Clear Intentions: Sometimes setting the intention to establishing being trusted adult in community is an invaluable outcome to achieve. ✅Adapt to Unexpected Changes: If your plans don't work out, don't stress. Emotional regulation can be challenging and may affect focus. ✅Small Groups: smaller numbers allow for the one-on-one attention which can help to provide additional quality and support in the community. ✅Plan for Long-Term Gains: Take small steps together to share knowledge and plan for legacy when connecting. Too many short term plans miss the benefits of sustainable impact in community. The Government is making legislative changes to make it easier for new early learning services to be established, and for existing services to operate, Associate Education Minister David Seymour says. The changes involve repealing the network approval provisions that apply when someone wants to establish a new early learning service, and stopping the introduction of new person responsible requirements that were taking effect in August of this year. Providers and parents are best placed to decide where early learning services should be established. Where there’s demand from parents providers will follow. Current network approval provisions introduced by Labour give government the right to decide where services should be. They also make setting up new services complex and inhibit competition. This gets in the way of early childhood professionals delivering effective, affordable and accessible services to parents and their children. We have to understand what the purpose of regulation is, and ensure whether, on balance, regulation is the appropriate tool to use. Mr Seymour is also proposing to revoke the National Statement on the Network of Licensed Early Childhood Services as soon as possible, to make granting approvals for new services faster, while the legislation is repealed. Consultation on this proposal opens today and runs until 5 May 2024. The Government also intends to make it easier for service providers to ensure key supervisory roles are filled. Removing the new requirement for a higher level of certification will mean that persons responsible will not need to obtain a Full (Category One or Two) Practicing Certificate. The requirement had the potential to result in increased fees, reduced operating hours, or even closure for some services, due to a lack of fully certificated teachers. Services in rural areas and lower socio-economic areas were most likely to suffer due to staffing and funding challenges. Teachers will still need a recognised teaching qualification and a practicing certificate, and all early learning services will still need to comply with current licencing requirements including all relevant health and safety regulations. Implementation of the requirements for changing the identity of the service provider on the service licence are also on hold following concerns raised by the sector. Early learning centres are a key part of our education system and are important for working parents who need somewhere to affordably send their children. The Government has also signalled its intention to review all regulations governing the early childhood education sector, with the newly created Ministry for Regulation conducting a regulatory review. We need to strip unnecessary compliance and cost so our early learning professionals can be focussed on education and care of children. After all, costs cannot all be absorbed – they eventually land on the parents.

Having lived in government care, and later working at MCFD for 4 years, I know firsthand some of the challenges and emotional toll it can take. Unfortunately the "system" has never been set up for success. I was fortunate during my time at YOET but I know that not every MFCD team operates similarly. I have seen many well-meaning (brand new) social workers thrust into the most critical roles at MCFD. This has led to social worker burnout, cynicism, and frustrations with families. This ultimately creates less care for the children and families. This recently released RCY report highlights critical issues like gaps in support, lack of accountability (from all sides), the need for more holistic approaches, and the importance of stable environments for children in care. I am sure that the report's findings resonate deeply with many others who have either lived or worked in the foster care system. There is an urgent need for changes to ensure every child in care can thrive. By sharing these stories and advocating for change, we can help drive the improvements needed to support the well-being and potential of every child in care.   Please take a moment to read the report or at least the summary. So happy to have won a GBS award for 2024! Enrolling in the BusinessPLUS co-curricular program was the best decision I made. This program has really helped me in my personal and professional development. I have completed 3/4 of the components including: 1. GAIN - completed 100 hours (minimum) of work experience 2. ENRICH - Participated in the Women in Leadership 6 months program online and the UNESCO GEM discussion to talk about technology accessibility in the Pacific islands' education system. 3. PREPARE - Attended multiple networking events at Griffith University with industry leaders as well as online career readiness workshops. However, the only component I have not completed yet is: 4. CONTRIBUTE - 50 hours of volunteer work. This program has given me more confidence, self-awareness and further improved my leadership skills. Being a female founder is often challenging, but always energising, soul-filling, and a strange kind of fun. Today's Electrify Aotearoa Female Founders Conference was one of those absolutely energising, uplifting, inspiring and wonderful days. As our amazing MC Julia Arnott-Neenee put it: "Founders backs can often get sore from carrying the world on their shoulders. Events like this are about refilling our cups." More than 600 female founders, investors and supporters (and a few men) and an incredible 39 speakers, reminding us that we are part of a very special community with the potential to change the world. Some take-outs for me: - Be a relentless supporter of other female founders. Offer them time, connections, encouragement, even complements (we all need more complements). Hype women doing amazing things. Help to open doors. Share their content on platforms like this. - Invest in other female led startups. Help to tip the balance that is ridiculously skewed towards men (men get about 90% of all start up capital in NZ. That has to change!). - Stop and celebrate the wins along the way, and the obstacles you overcome - and when you hit the low patches, just keep going. - We need courageous, compassionate leaders who are willing to do work on themselves. As female founders, we need look after our own well-being and growth. - We can achieve anything. - And one of the most important things is to keep having fun, or as Dale Clareburt put it: "You've got to know how to laugh your tits off." Thank you so, so much to Marian Johnson and her amazing Ministry of Awesome organising crew, all of the wonderful speakers (39 is too many to name but you were all amazing), and all of the other incredible wāhine in the room. And a very special thank you to Morag (Mo) McConnell for gifting me a last minute ticket to be there today. Let's all keep fanning each others' flames :)
