Invitation Program for International Companies in Regional Key Industries Kyoto Prefecture is promoting the “ZET-valley concept” to create innovative “zero carbon manufacturing” technologies (Zero Emission Technology), in fields where industries in Kyoto are globally competitive, such as EV, battery, and bio-manufacturing, and to implement these technologies in our society in collaboration with local governments and other organizations. In addition, we will enhance the environment for the creation of next-generation semiconductors by leveraging the expertise of universities and companies with a proven track record in developing and commercializing new materials for power semiconductors, which are essential for improving the performance of EVs. To accelerate these efforts, we recognize the importance of sector-specific incubation facilities, based on examples of industrial clusters formed overseas, that connect researchers, startups, investors, and large companies, and provide business matching and support for human resources, funding, and collaboration. Here in Kyoto, we intend to attract business opportunities for world-class incubators in relation to decarbonization and semiconductors. This project will invite prominent international incubators and related companies in the fields of decarbonization and semiconductors to collaborate with Kyoto-based researchers and startups, and to exchange views with Kyoto’s large companies, universities, and start-up ecosystem. The goal is to demonstrate the potential of industries in Kyoto to these international companies and attract incubation facilities to Kyoto going forward. https://lnkd.in/gt--RjMw

Award: Dr. Atsushi Terazono, Senior Principal Researcher and Dr. Aya Yoshida, Senior Researcher, receives Impact Award Academia (Electronics Goes Green 2024+) from Fraunhofer IZM on June 18, 2024 Subject of Award: E-waste generation and material flow in Japan and other Asia, Electron. Goes Green 2008+, Proceedings, 857-862, 2008 Comment from the awardees: In June, we received the prestigious Impact Award Academia at Electronics Goes Green 2024+ in Germany. Electronics Goes Green is organized by Fraunhofer IZM (Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration) and held every four years in Berlin, Germany. The conference brings together academia, policy makers and industry players to promote sustainability in the electronics and ICT industries. The conference has established the Impact Award, in which an individual from academia, policy, and industry is selected from presenters at past conferences for their outstanding contributions, including high citation rates. (Dr. Terazono) I had attended the conference consecutively from 2008 to this year (including the online conference in 2020), and received the Impact Award Academia for the presentation "E-waste Occurrence and Material Flow in Japan and Asia," which I gave with Dr. Aya Yoshida in 2008. The award was unexpected, but the awarder's speech indicated the importance and pioneering nature of our work and the impact of presenting our highly cited work at the conference. I am sincerely grateful to my colleagues in Asia with whom I worked with, as I feel that this impact was due to the papers described with them and published in the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management at that time. E-waste research has taken us from analysis of material flows and pollution to batteries (the subject of my presentation this year), plastics, product design, and circular economy. We hope to continue to contribute to the sustainability of electronics through our research. https://lnkd.in/gyXCkCWJ

[ Innovation & Entrepreneurship | Next-generation Color Solar Power Generation System ] How could solar panels be both functional and beautiful? Inspired by the colorful wings of butterflies, a group of researchers at #HKUST has developed coloured solar panels, transforming them into a new generation of aesthetically pleasing architectural elements and taking the next step towards building a carbon-neutral future! Coloured solar panels utilize nano-sized layers, semi-transparent PV glazing, and thin-film BIPV materials, combining aesthetics and technology. Infusing solar panels with diverse colors, they also function as windows for buildings, optimizing light absorption capabilities while minimizing cooling loads and enabling energy collection even on sunny or cloudy days. With minimal energy consumption and maximum power efficiency, coloured solar panels have become the preferred choice for sustainable architectural designs in carbon-neutral cities. Starting September 1, COVID-19 will be officially renamed "Severe Complicated COVID-19" in Taiwan, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The new definition for reported cases will require symptoms such as a fever of 38 degrees Celsius or higher, respiratory symptoms followed by pneumonia or other complications, and necessitating ICU treatment or resulting in death. The reporting timeframe for these cases will extend from 72 hours to one week. It is estimated that this change will reduce the number of weekly reported cases to about 5-10% of current levels, though access to publicly funded medication like Remdesivir will remain unchanged. The CDC has also noted a decline in severe domestic COVID-19 cases and deaths over the past weeks and anticipates announcing the end of the sixth COVID-19 epidemic phase soon. #AsiaRisk #EpidemicsandPandemics #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/guQ59RF7

Typhoon Capricorn may invade Taiwan from September 5 to 7, and its predicted path may pass over or land in Taiwan. Typhoon Capricorn is projected to be active near Taiwan from September 5 to 7, with potential paths for either passing by or directly landing on the island. Recent simulations from both the European and American cluster models indicate that the threat posed by the typhoon should not be underestimated, as the models continue to undergo significant adjustments. As of now, the Meteorological Administration has also issued warnings for high temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius across 14 counties and cities. The weather forecast for September indicates that typhoon activity may continue through November, although the overall number may be slightly below normal. Additionally, weather variability related to the typhoon could lead to local heavy rainfall, particularly in central and southern Taiwan. #AsiaRisk #NaturalDisasters #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gJsBUNyj

Taiwan War Room/Taiwan Strait Security Orange Light and Joint Sword Military Exercise Locking Taiwan Become the New Normal (Lu Wenhao) The South Korean Marine Corps is participating in the "Maritime Warrior Cooperation" (KAMANDAG) exercise in the Philippines from October 14 to 25. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces' Izumo-class frigate "Kaga" has conducted F-35B landing tests with the US military. On October 17, Chinese and Russian naval fleets completed their fourth joint patrol in the Asia-Pacific, while US and Canadian warships engaged in freedom of navigation through the Taiwan Strait on October 20. The USS Washington aircraft carrier is expected to arrive in Japanese waters soon. In Taiwan, political tensions persist as Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, reiterated China's willingness for peaceful reunification but did not rule out the use of force. During a visit to Fujian Province, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for greater cultural exchanges and development with Taiwan. Former President Tsai Ing-wen's return to Taiwan from Europe further complicates the diplomatic landscape. The Chinese military continues its activities around Taiwan, including the "Joint Sword-2024B" exercise featuring the "Liaoning" aircraft carrier. Regular incursions by Chinese military aircraft into Taiwan's air defense identification zone have become routine, with daily operations featuring over ten aircraft and around eight naval vessels. The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese military declares that these military exercises have normalized in the region, underscoring ongoing tensions amid US and allied military presence in the vicinity. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Taiwan Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. https://lnkd.in/gtXpGdFW #Self-Guided #Audio Tours #GetYourGuide #AI Recently, local activity OTA "GetYourGuide" informed suppliers that they will reduce "self or mobile-guided audio tours, exploration games, and scavenger hunts," and remove SIM cards, mobile WiFi rentals, and autonomous car rentals by July 31. Does this mean self-guided audio tours are a failed product with no future for startups and investments? Haize Capital doesn't think so. GetYourGuide is a significant player in the OTA industry, and its removal of these niche products is noteworthy. However, to evaluate opportunities, we must understand the proportion and reasons for these removals and the change in demand. For example, the removal of SIM cards and WiFi equipment doesn't mean the end of international roaming demand, as it's being replaced by e-SIMs and telecom roaming services. As for audio tours, GetYourGuide hasn't removed all such products—only the broader "self or mobile-guided audio tours, exploration games, and scavenger hunts" with lower customer value. They still offer site-specific audio guides. What are the issues with these three types of products? Haize Capital uses VoiceMap and Questo as examples to explain the characteristics and problems: 1. VoiceMap: Provides self-guided audio tours using GPS technology for walking, cycling, driving, and boat trips, covering over 300 destinations. The product price is around $10. Common complaints include inaccurate GPS (missing important sights or information), mismatched audio content (descriptions not matching actual sights), and poor audio quality. 2. Questo: Offers gamified walking tours that turn city exploration into interactive games, covering over 600 cities worldwide. Prices range from $10 to $40. Common complaints include imbalanced difficulty (tasks being too easy or too hard), app technical issues (failure to start or map errors), and poor game design. Based on the information, Haize Capital believes GetYourGuide sees these products as low commission with high complaints. Compared to destination tours priced between $100 to $300, managing and resolving complaints for $10 products, even with a 20% commission, might not be economically viable, affecting customer experience and ROI. Are these products truly without opportunities? Haize Capital thinks self-guided tours (downloadable travel products) are a growing category. In the past five years, dozens of startups have emerged globally offering these experiences, a trend accelerated by solo travel demand during the pandemic. They are popular with young, cost-conscious consumers and those who prefer independent travel. Future AI-driven mobile self-guided tour products will continue to appear, indicating that while there are opportunities, the technical costs may be higher than anticipated.

Trump once again accuses Taiwan of "stealing the chip business." Experts bring this up and slap him in the face: first check how many patents TSMC has Donald Trump has reiterated claims that Taiwan has "stolen" the U.S. chip business, suggesting they owe protection fees for U.S. military support. He argues that Taiwan benefits from American protection without proper compensation, continuing his previous assertions about Taiwan's role in the semiconductor industry. In contrast, Wu Lingxiang, CEO of the Science and Technology Think Tank, criticized Trump's remarks as misleading. He emphasized TSMC's numerous patents and technological advancements, attributing them to the dedication of Taiwanese workers rather than theft. Analyst Lu Xingzhi added that Taiwan's significant investments in its semiconductor capabilities fulfill its defense spending obligations through U.S. purchases. Wu cautioned against viewing Taiwan as a competitor, stressing U.S. dependence on TSMC for advanced AI chips. He asserted that TSMC's independent technological development challenges Trump's accusations, highlighting the necessity of collaboration over conflict in the semiconductor sector. #Semiconductors #Taiwan https://lnkd.in/g4UxnnUy
