The Kasugano-michi area has been associated with an elegant atmosphere, with its place name being included in waka poems since ancient times. Before the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, the area was located at a strategic point on the Saigoku Kaido road that ran from the capital of Kyoto to Dazaifu in Kyushu. Moreover, it is thought to have been an extremely important location, as it was located near the confluence of Saigoku Kaido, which branched into Honkaido and Hamakaido. Kasuganomichi Shopping Street developed from the Meiji period to the Taisho period with the development of Kobe Port as a downtown area that rivaled Shinkaichi to the west, and together with Ononakamichi Shopping Street, it was called one of Kobe's three major shopping streets. After the war, people working at large factories such as Kobe Steel located in the area sought out popular standing bars and other places to relax after a long day's work, and the area has carved out a history as a downtown area full of humanity. This time, I asked my friend Hiromi-chan, whose grandmother lived in this area, to accompany me, and we walked along the Kasuganomichi shopping street while listening to stories about her childhood. Although it has changed a lot from the past, Kasuganomichi Shopping Street still retains a lot of the retro feel of the Showa era. Please take a look at the cityscape that we will continue to treasure. You can view the folk tale of "Gorota Tree" that appears in the video on the following website.
