📰 On recent aerospace news: Bell Textron Inc. has been selected for Phase 1B of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Speed and Runway Independent Technologies (SPRINT) X-Plane program. The SPRINT program intends to design, build, and fly an X-plane, an experimental aircraft to demonstrate enabling technologies and integrated concepts necessary for a transformational combination of aircraft speed and runway independence for the next generation of air mobility platforms. In Phase 1A, Bell executed conceptual design review and will move into preliminary design efforts for the SPRINT X-plane. NASA's Artemis II Astronauts 'Get Hands On' with Orion | Lockheed Martin FriendsofNASA.org: Over several visits to our campus in Littleton, Colorado, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, and their backup crew have been hard at work testing Orion’s crew module hatch. This is important training that puts hundreds of opening and closing cycles on a hatch to test its durability. With the need to operate the hatch so many times, the training sessions serve as a great opportunity for the crew to train on the many ways the hatch can operate in a variety of situations. See how testing is done to simulate real-life mission conditions, and hear firsthand from astronaut Victor Glover about the importance of flight hardware training. The approximately 10-day Artemis II Mission will be NASA’s first crewed flight test of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft around the Moon to verify today’s capabilities for humans to explore deep space and pave the way for long-term exploration and science on the lunar surface, including landing the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon. The Artemis II crew module is now undergoing acoustic testing ahead of integration with the European Service Module (ESM). Artemis II will launch no earlier than September 2025. Phase3D's work was done for the United States Air Force and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, two well-known #aerospace part producers who rely on #additivemanufacturing, and validated with two #materials on two different #laserpowderbedfusion (PBF) machines. “Providing our customers a high correlation of measurable build anomalies to part defects is changing what is possible for AM,” says Niall O'Dowd, PhD O’Dowd, Founder and CEO of Phase3D. “Our customers continue to request objective data that can identify part defects when they occur. This isn't a slip-up by an absent-minded technician—it's a Marshall engineering project that helped green-light the C-130J for production 30 years ago. In the early nineties, the C-130J was in development by Lockheed Martin and looked set to deliver a raft of upgrades over the C-130K. However, many of these—especially the brand new composite propeller-engine combination—needed to be thoroughly put through their paces before the programme could move further. Lockheed Martin tasked Marshall with modifying a loaned C-130K to accommodate a near-production Allison AE2100DW turboprop engine and the now-iconic Dowty R391 composite six-bladed propeller system (installed in a nacelle modified by Westland). Nearly 400 sensors were fitted to the aircraft, engine, nacelle and propeller to measure more than 550 test points. Marshall completed a full flight test programme within the 50 hour target, in addition to air-to-air refuelling exercises and ground-based infrared signature testing. The engine/propeller combination performed admirably... and the rest is history. #ProblemSolvers #EngineeringLeadership #TBT #ThrowbackThursday
