"We are still not confident that tamariki in similar situations to Malachi are any more likely to be seen, or kept safe by the system, than they were when Malachi died." A year on from Dame Karen Poutasi's review into the murder of Malachi, Aroturuki The Independant Children's Monitor have today released their review of children's systems reponse to her recommendations. It is heartbreaking, frustrating and genuinely scary that in the Monitor's very considered, experienced and evidence based opinion that tamariki are no safer today, than two years ago. This report lays out continuing failures in the response system to take action when alerted, and that these failures are tied to inadequate resources, inconsistent practice and unclear levels of accepted risk. At its heart, this report tells us that the likelihood of another child being visible to those whose role it is to keep them safe, is very, very, very low. Malachi's murder was a failure of visibility and understanding of risk. Oranga Tamariki's response to this report is in and of itself, deeply disappointing. And alongside the current substantial cuts delivered by OT to the social services sector, we are deeply concerned that the risk for tamariki in Aotearoa continues to increase, while their visibility decreases. https://lnkd.in/gvkHqNw7

The outspoken CPL Group PNG Chief Executive Officer Navin Raju has resigned from the company. In a short post released on LinkedIn, Ravu shared a mixed bag of emotions saying "It's with a mix of excitement and a touch of sadness that, after six incredible years at CPL Group, the last three and a half as Group CEO, I've decided to pursue new challenges. "These past few years haven't been easy. We've weathered crisis after crisis, each one testing our resilience. The toll it's taken, especially after the January 10th incident, is undeniable. The pressure was immense, and the stress, well, it wasn't sustainable forever. "But through it all, I've had the immense privilege of leading one of PNG's finest retail companies. CPL's commitment to employees, customers, and the country itself runs deep – it's in the very fabric of this company. Contributing to that mission has been truly rewarding, a chance to give back to a place I've grown so fond of" Raju says while he is eager to explore his next move, he intends to take a well-deserved break first. "Looking back, I cherish my time at CPL, especially the triumphs we achieved together during even the toughest times. The incredible team I've worked alongside – they're more than colleagues, they're family. And let me tell you, I'll miss them dearly". Like many CEOs in Papua New Guinea's private sector, Raju has faced significant challenges due to the country's deteriorating economic conditions. These pressures include rising unemployment, a declining kina (the national currency), and foreign currency shortages. Despite these obstacles, Raju, along with other leaders, has demonstrated strong leadership by continuing to lead the company. CPL Group, a company that was hit hard by the Black Wednesday event continues to operate and give back to society, thanks to leaders like Raju who has been at the helm, leading CPL out of the chaotic Black Wednesday that cost CPL millions in damages. CPL Board Chairman Stan Joyce advised the market in a statement released that "Mr. Navin Raju, CPL Group CEO, has informed the Board of his decision to pursue his interests outside of the Company. Mr. Raju’s last day of employment will be 24th June 2024. Interim reporting announcements will be made in due course" Navin joined CPL in 2018 with Hardware Haus Limited as CEO, and later in 2021 was appointed to CPL Group CEO, and has made a significant contribution to rebuilding the Company. Navin ran CPL over the past six and a half years.

New $19.4m electric vehicle training facility to open in Canberra A new $19.4 million training facility for industries developing, operating and maintaining EVs and related technology is to be established at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). The Electric Vehicle (EV) Centre of Excellence will develop training for mechanics, technicians and developers of light and heavy vehicles and mobile plant technology, hydrogen vehicles and associated fields such as charging infrastructure installation and maintenance, and diploma and degree apprenticeship pathways. The centre will network with TAFEs in other states and leverage partnerships with universities, jobs and skills councils and industry to build up Australia’s skills base to support increased EV uptake and the transition to net zero, said a media statement announcing the news. OTA statement on the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide OTA welcomes the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, especially those that will make it quicker and easier for veterans to access vital heath supports. Every life lost to suicide is a preventable tragedy and more must be done to address the risk factors within Australia’s armed services, including improvements to ensure safe quality help is available for those who need it. OTA made a submission to the Commission, calling for improvements to reduce current barriers that prevent veterans from receiving timely and high-quality care, for both physical disability and mental illness. OTA particularly welcomes Recommendation 71 of the Final Report which urges an increase to DVA fee rates, which are substantially lower than those of other government schemes including the NDIS, and mean many providers cannot afford to offer services to veterans.
