Mayor Larry Larson

Larry Larson, the esteemed Mayor of Box Elder, South Dakota, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his role in leading our dynamic community.

Larry's lifelong commitment to education and public service speaks volumes about his dedication to the community. Prior to serving as Mayor, he spent an impressive 36 years on the Douglas School Board and another 34 years on the Black Hills Special Services Board. With a career spanning four decades, he made a significant impact as both a teacher and an administrator before retiring in 2012.

Beyond his role as Mayor, Larry is a highly active community leader, contributing his time and expertise to various organizations that make Box Elder thrive. He is an honorary member of the Box Elder American Legion Post 315 and a proud member of the Ellsworth/Box Elder Lions Club. Additionally, he is actively engaged in the Box Elder Pioneers Civic Club, where he continues to shape the city's future. Larry's commitment extends to his involvement with the Black Hills State University Advisory Board, the Highmark FCU advisory board, and the BH Council of Local Government board.

Larry's academic journey has further equipped him for his role as a community leader. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. His pursuit of knowledge continued with the completion of a Master of Arts degree in Administration from South Dakota State University.

Larry is happily married to Sandy Larson, a retired elementary school librarian at the Francis Case School in Box Elder. Together, they have raised two children, both of whom have embraced the family tradition of education. Their oldest child, a daughter, is now happily married and has four daughters of her own, while their son is married and has one daughter, continuing the family's legacy of dedication to the community and education. Larry's commitment to Box Elder is rooted in his passion for serving, and his leadership has left an indelible mark on the city he calls home.
