Last Thursday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Celebrate Successes workshop as part of the Women in STEM Careers program at the University of Adelaide. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Sharon Ferrier for the insightful session! One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of overcoming perfectionism. We often hold ourselves back, waiting for the perfect moment or when we are perfectly ready to take action. This workshop made me realise that embracing opportunities as they come, even when things aren't flawless, can lead to remarkable growth. Stepping out of our comfort zones is also essential for professional development. True learning happens when we challenge ourselves and take risks. Only when we are a little uncomfortable, that's when we know we're growing. Another key point was the power of self-reflection. Celebrating our achievements, no matter how small, helps build our confidence. This is an important yet sometimes neglected aspect of career growth. I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the Women in STEM Careers team for putting together this empowering program. It not only helps me develop confidence but also provides me with realistic strategies to navigate my professional journey. This week in #electricalengineering at University of Wollongong we learnt about the Discrete-Time Fourier Transform and the Discrete Fourier transform. It was pretty neat seeing how you can scan a signal for it's frequency components and get another function out of. Can't wait to learn more, filter circuits look fascinating. What are the applications of DTFTs and DFTs in the real world?

Reflecting on my experience at the AI Forum NZ NZ Hackathon over the past two days, I’m thrilled to share that my team secured third place with our Land Usage Optimization Platform for Agricultural Landowners and Custodians! 🎉 The journey was truly exhilarating—filled with learning, collaboration, and innovation. A key takeaway for me was realizing the importance of thoroughly explaining our project's AI learning and operation aspects. While our concept was strong, the feedback we received highlighted the need for a deeper dive into the AI component. This experience underscored the value of clear, detailed communication, especially when working with cutting-edge technologies like machine learning. During the event, I also had the opportunity to explore Amazon Web Services (AWS) and cloud infrastructure, which was both challenging and rewarding. A huge shoutout to the University of Canterbury and Datacom volunteers for their invaluable support and guidance. Their expertise was instrumental in helping us refine our idea on the spot. One of the most inspiring moments was seeing the winning team, Cabbage, take home the top prize with their brilliantly thought-out idea. They developed an AI-powered app that solves a common everyday pain point for Kiwis—helping users determine which bin to use for different types of packaging and making more informed decisions in the supermarket. It’s an idea that could significantly impact reducing waste and promoting sustainability. I hope they turn their idea into an MVP and eventually bring it to market. Participating in the hackathon gave me a fresh perspective. Initially focused on coding, I quickly realized the equal importance of ideation, pitch decks, and articulating every aspect of the tech stack. This shift allowed me to grow not just as a tech enthusiast but also as a communicator and strategist. I encourage everyone to participate in hackathons whenever possible, even if it’s outside your comfort zone. The learning, growth, and unexpected discoveries are genuinely remarkable. The Tech Council of Australia welcomes the NSW Parliamentary Committee report and recommendations from the Inquiry into Artificial Intelligence. As the first Australian parliamentary inquiry into AI, NSW has shown national leadership in AI capability and governance, being the first state to adopt an AI Assurance Framework, and we commend the work of Jeremy Buckingham and Robert Borsak for chairing this important inquiry, as well as NSW Parliamentarians Dr Sarah Kaine, Stephen Lawrence MLC, The Hon. Jacqui Munro MLC, Hon. Cameron Murphy MLC, and Chris Rath for their support and interest in this crucial policy issue.   We support the Committee’s recommendations that the NSW Government continue as an exemplar of responsible AI adoption by creating a public register of ADM systems within Government and its agencies to promote accountability and transparency, as well as the intent to create responsible AI roles and functions within Government. 🚀 JCU Brisbane Student Board Website Development In this team project for the JCU Brisbane Student Board, I played a key role in the development of a tailored WordPress website in support of their rebranding efforts. This entails a responsive and user-friendly platform that improves effective communication between students and the board, offers some requisite resources, and increases student engagement. Role and Contributions - Web Development Led design and development efforts on the custom WordPress theme developed in PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This involved modern, intuitive UI design in line with the rebranding of JCUBSB and ensuring the responsive website works fluently on desktops, tablets, and smartphones. - Content Management I helped in building the structure for the website information, which included the construction of pages for Events, Student Resources, and Contact/Feedback. This would involve careful attention to information architecture and the integration of multimedia elements to ensure that the site was both engaging and informative. - Collaborative Workflow Worked collaboratively with the team to devise a development workflow that was both modern and streamlined in its deployment. Version control would be by Git, whereby all changes would be tracked down and collaboration goes on smoothly. Coordinated with team members on integrating feedback and constant improvement along the way. - User Experience Design I provided an intuitive system of navigation and added some features like a search bar and call-to-action buttons to make the user experience even better. Detailed layout for the website, which allowed users to flow through the content easily, was done. Skills Gained: - Technical Proficiency This project enabled me to increase my understanding of developing WordPress, particularly in the area of custom theme creation. I have also sharpened my skills in PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. - Project Management From this project, I could learn much about project management. More specifically, how to manage tasks among colleagues and keep up with deadlines. Working in a team-based environment with an organized workflow provided valuable experience. - Problem-Solving The project had problems that required creative solutions. Some of these were how to make the website responsive, event filtering, and the implementation of registration features. I troubleshot very effectively to ensure a polished final product. Result The website of the JCU Brisbane Student Board was successfully launched, which hosts an engaging front page, interactive event listings, and comprehensive student resources. The site acts as a fundamental tool for JCUBSB when communicating with students and promoting their initiatives to them. This project has not only underlined my technical and collaborative competencies; it also significantly improved my chances in the job market in terms of web development and project management.

The Tech Council of Australia's 'Meeting the AI Skills Boom' report forecasts that AI will create 200,000 jobs in Australia by the end of this decade. But how do we reconcile that with "The Robots are taking our jobs" headlines? Well, there's a parallel to a century ago: In 1890 there were 13,800 companies in the United States in the business of building carriages pulled by horses. By 1920, only 90 such companies remained. But, in 1913 the first Ford assembly line was switched on, and within a decade the US was producing 20 million cars per year. Between 1910 and 1950, the auto industry created 6.9 million net new jobs in the United States, equivalent to 11 percent of the country’s workforce in 1950. That's perhaps what we're living through, and although we can't see the end, we can see the beginning. I'll step in to persuade somebody to not go and study journalism or copywriting (yes, we still need them, but demand won't match supply). And I'll actively encourage people to study multi-functional skills.
