Manifolds gone wild! One of the three hands-on projects in our semester long design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) course at The University of Auckland is for students to redesign a solid block manifold into one with both minimal part material and minimal support material (the two of which are often in conflict with each other). This semester we had just over 100 students doing this exercise and, as part of the project, the students had to design their manifold, generate supports in #Magics to verify that it used minimal support material (and if it used too much, go back and reiterate on their design), and to undertake all the post-processing of their manifolds themselves. In most cases, the students did a great job and, in theory, many of the manifolds would have been printable with little to no support material other than a bit to weld it to the build plate. However, being the nice guy that I am, and because I believe it is character building to remove support material (😊), for the actual build I put on way more support than was strictly needed. I also did this to avoid having one bad design crash the print and ruin all the others. But seriously, it is only once a student experiences the joy of removing steel support material that they truly understand why we try to design to minimize support material if at all possible. Here's a pic of the first 32 printed manifolds still attached to the build plate. The 2nd batch is printing today, and the 3rd batch will print tomorrow. Last month our PhD students from the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering showcased their research in the Three Minute Thesis Challenge (3MT®)!🌟 🎓 The 3MT®, developed by The University of Queensland, challenges PhD students to enhance their academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Students Taya Stankevych, Parvathi Vasudevan, Galina Makarikhina, and Ashley Van Bruygom showcased their research in the Penrose Atrium, explaining complex concepts in just three minutes to a general audience. Parvathi, who is researching additive manufacturing ceramic filters for high-temperature molten metal casting to improve current manufacturing methods, shares her experience: "3MT was a challenging opportunity – to articulate complex scientific concepts in layman’s terms. Our PhD students are playing a significant role within our program, and in the broader industry. Meet (Dex) Hao Chang! 🗣 Have Your Say on NSW Plastics: The Way Forward action paper The NSW Government has launched the paper NSW Plastics: The Way Forward, proposing how NSW can take further action to tackle plastics and the proposed timeframes for action. The NSW Plastics: The Way Forward action plan proposes new initiatives including: ♻ Phasing out items like plastic lollipop sticks, pizza savers and food tags for bread, bakery and pantry items ♻ Bringing NSW into line with other states and phasing out the release of lighter-than-air balloons as well as the supply of plastic balloon sticks, clips and ties ♻ Introducing design standards for single-use plastic cups, food containers and their lids to ensure they are easily recyclable ♻ Phasing out the supply of unnecessary plastic barrier bags. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking feedback and input from the community and stakeholders on the actions and timeframes in the paper. SImplified parametric models combined with 3D Print on demand is going to completely change how spare parts are sourced. Rather than a catalogue, you will just have a configurator that doesn't match to a part, it creates the part.

Researchers at the University of Southern Queensland will be trained to use software that can simulate hypersonic space missions in a deal facilitated by the iLAuNCH research collaboration. As part of the agreement, software engineering company LEAP Australia will provide scientists with access to the ANSYS suite of tools, which can model aerodynamics and structures. While hypersonic technology – defined as flying at least five times the speed of sound – is nothing new, countries are currently in an arms’ race to develop the next generation of missiles that are so manoeuvrable in midair they can’t be intercepted or detected. https://bit.ly/4bwIf33
