President Trump’s personal assistant has resigned abruptly after allegedly sharing private information about the first family with journalists.

Madeleine Westerhout, 28, became Mr Trump’s gatekeeper when he entered the White House. She sat outside the Oval Office with control over visitors, telephone callers and his diary.

White House officials had become wary of her as she tried to expand her role to include duties associated with foreign travel, the website Politico said. It added that she had claimed at an off-the-record dinner with reporters that she had a better relationship with the president than his daughters, Ivanka and Tiffany, and that Mr Trump did not like to appear in photographs with Tiffany because he thought she was overweight.
