Sakurazaka46 (櫻坂46?) is a Japanese idol group, formerly known as Keyakizaka46, that debuted on October 14, 2020. The group name was announced officially on September 20, 2020. Their debut single, Nobody's Fault, was released on December 9, 2020.
After renaming to Sakurazaka46, the fans of the group are called Buddies, after the song of the same name.
History[]
2020[]
Following the graduation of ace Hirate Yurina, on July 16, 2020, the captain of Keyakizaka46 (Sugai Yuuka) announced that Keyakizaka46 would undergo rebranding. They would release one final digital single and hold a last concert in October 2020.
On September 20, 2020, the twitter account UNI'S ON AIR (Keyakizaka46 + Hinatazaka46 Official News Account) tweeted the hashtag #櫻坂46 (Sakurazaka46) in combination with cherry blossom emojis. On the same day, a video advertisement was played on big screens on streets all over Tokyo, which read, "We will surpass Keyakizaka46. Sakurazaka46."
2021[]
On January 4, 2021, the group's new structure was announced with Sugai Yuuka continuing as the group's captain and Matsuda Rina from the 2nd generation taking over as vice-captain, replacing Moriya Akane.
In 2021, Sakurazaka46 held their first national tour after rebranding, "Sakurazaka46 1st TOUR 2021," from September 11 to October 31.
2022[]
In 2022, Sakurazaka46 held their 2nd Tour 2022 "As you know?" from September 29 to November 9. The final two days were held at Tokyo Dome, where Sugai Yuuka graduated. The position as the group's captain was handed over to Matsuda Rina.
2023[]
The official website announced the addition of 11 new members as Sakurazaka46 3rd generation members on January 5, 2023. The next day, the official YouTube channel began releasing profile videos, introducing one new member per day, except for two members who were introduced later in March due to academic reasons.
On July 15, 2023, Sakurazaka46 held their first overseas concert at the Japan Expo Paris 2023, which was held in Parc des Expositions de Villepinte in Paris, France. This was followed by a performance at Japan Expo Malaysia 2023, held at Pavilion Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 18, 2023.
On December 14, 2023, Sakurazaka46 performed their 7th single's main song, Shoninyokkyu, at the Asia Artist Awards 2023 held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, Philippines. The group secured two awards in the Popularity and Best Musician categories. This performance marked the group’s third overseas appearance, following their shows at Japan Expo Malaysia and Paris.
