US Threatens Stockholm Agreement: Yemen Remains Defiant
The US has escalated its threats against Sana'a, focusing on dismantling the Stockholm Agreement on Hodeidah, signed in late 2018 under UN supervision. Al-Akhbar learned from government sources in Sana'a that Yemeni officials received indirect threats from the US, warning of plans to undermine the agreement, potentially leading to an occupation of the city and heightened tensions on the western coast. This escalation follows failed US efforts to curb Yemen's support for Palestine and Lebanon, with Washington cautioning that drastic measures could destabilize the region.
In response, Yemeni leaders, led by Mohammad Ali Al-Houthi, affirmed their readiness to resist any aggression targeting Yemen. Al-Houthi stressed that US threats would not weaken Yemen’s commitment to supporting Palestine and Lebanon. Mohammad Al-Bukhiti of Ansar Allah described the threats as provocations not only from the US and Britain but also from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, warning of potential retaliation.
Jamal Amer, the Foreign Affairs Minister for the Sana'a government, criticized the US's actions against Ansar Allah and warned that reckless American moves could result in consequences worse than the Vietnam War. He also rejected a proposal from US envoy Tim Lenderking, who suggested easing restrictions on Ansar Allah in exchange for halting support for Palestine and Lebanon.
Intelligence reports revealed that the Aden-based Presidential Council requested US intervention to terminate the Stockholm Agreement, a sentiment echoed by UAE- and Saudi-backed militias during their recent meeting with Lenderking in Washington. Meanwhile, UN envoy Hans Grundberg's visit to Washington seeks to prevent the collapse of the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic solutions in this volatile situation.
