For those who missed it: ▪ From 1 July 2025, any practice location that holds a current licence will receive a ‘practice-based’ licence that provides full Medicare eligibility to all MRI equipment located at the practice. This means all current partially-licensed sites will be eligible for full Medicare funding. Additionally, licenses will be practice-based, not system-based meaning sites are able to expand their services by offering more MR systems on site. ▪ From 1 July 2027, all comprehensive diagnostic imaging practices will have their ineligible MRI machines upgraded to access all Medicare funded MRI services, at which point all MRI licensing requirements will cease. The identification and monitoring of glaucoma progression are paramount for guiding treatment decisions and optimizing patient outcomes. Traditional clinical markers such as intraocular pressure (IOP), optic nerve head changes, and visual field progression remain cornerstones in glaucoma management. However, advancements in imaging technologies, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (CSLO), have enabled the detection of subtle structural changes in the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer, facilitating earlier identification of progression. Additionally, functional assessments such as frequency-doubling technology (FDT) perimetry and standard automated perimetry (SAP) provide complementary information regarding visual field deterioration. Furthermore, novel techniques such as machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence hold promise in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of glaucoma progression detection. Integrating these diverse clinical markers into a comprehensive monitoring strategy enables clinicians to detect progression promptly, tailor treatment regimens, and preserve patients' visual function and quality of life. Further research is warranted to refine existing methods and validate emerging technologies to optimize glaucoma management in clinical practice. Professor Jamie Craig is the Chair and Academic Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Flinders University and a Consultant Ophthalmologist, Professor Jamie Craig specialises in the care of patients with glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Professor Craig is a clinician-scientist and NHMRC Practitioner-Fellow, who translates laboratory-based research into clinical practice. Having developed an exceptional track record in synergising clinical practice and laboratory-based research, Professor Craig’s pioneering work establishing the Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma has been critical to Australia leading the world in discovery and translation of glaucoma genetics. His clinical practice and ongoing leadership of the world’s largest glaucoma progression study enable significant translational outcomes to be achieved by more rational use of available tools, coupled with innovative concepts.

CHF urges the Australian Government to make dental care more affordable and accessible in the upcoming Federal Budget. Some Australians simply do not have access to essential oral healthcare with poor oral healthcare causing devastating effects on both the individual and the wider community. Now is a critical time for the Federal Government to take the lead on addressing the systemic failure of the current piecemeal approach. As a member of the National Oral Health Alliance (NOHA), we repeat their call for funding for five immediate actions as a package: 🦷 Provide at least $500 million additional funding for public dental services. 🦷 Implement the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality & Safety and the recommendations of the Senate Select Committee into the Provision of and Access to Dental Services in Australia. 🦷 Provide funding to develop and implement a new 10-year Australian National Oral Health Plan. 🦷 Appoint a Chief Dental and Oral Health Officer. 🦷 Develop and implement a health levy on sugar sweetened beverages. The Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO) is “strongly opposed to the emerging indications” that the Federal Government may remove the power of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and other medical colleges when vetting and approving overseas-trained specialists to practise in Australia. The call comes as the government considered 28 recommendations from the ‘Independent review of Australia’s regulatory settings relating to overseas health practitioners’ – conducted by Ms Robyn Kruk – aiming to remove “unnecessary regulatory barriers” faced by internationally qualified health professionals. It’s hoped cutting red tape will make Australia a more attractive destination for foreign health professionals and alleviate workforce pressures, leading to better healthcare for the population.  https://lnkd.in/gfp7mMby

CX co-chairs Dittmar Böckler (University Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany) and Andrew Holden (Auckland City Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand) discuss with Marc Schermerhorn (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, USA) the unmet need in EVAR and the failure of some sacs to regress after implantation and a possible solution being evaluated in the AAA-SHAPE Pivotal Trial. Holden highlighted data from the AAA-SHAPE early feasibility studies that evaluated the IMPEDE-FX embolisation plug for the management of AAA sacs at the time of EVAR. This novel technology is comprised of shape memory polymer, a porous polyurethane scaffold that supports rapid conversion to organised thrombus, which Holden reports could lead to sac shrinkage.
