The link between unemployment and interest rates Australia’s unemployment rate edged up from 4.0% in May to 4.1% in June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, but is still lower than in many other prominent countries. The unemployment rate is 4.1% in America, 4.4% in the UK, 5.0% in China, 6.4% in Canada and also 6.4% in the Euro zone. The unemployment rate is one of the data points the Reserve Bank board is watching very closely, as it decides what to do with the cash rate. If unemployment rises, in tandem with a weakening economy, that would put downward pressure on inflation, which would strengthen the case for the Reserve Bank to reduce the cash rate. But if the labour market remains tight and wages growth (currently 4.1% per year) remains elevated, that would put upward pressure on inflation, which would make the Reserve Bank wary of cutting rates. #economy #jobs #homeloans

The Minister for the NDIS has released a proposed list of what will and will not be classified as an NDIS support. When/if the new NDIS Bill becomes law, this list will decide what supports people can access. The list includes 36 categories of supports the government has defined as NDIS supports and 15 categories of services that are not NDIS supports. A list like this is a major change and moves away from how the NDIS currently operates, with decisions made regarding what is reasonable and necessary. Much is missing from the proposed list, and some services that psychologists provide are now proposed to be specifically excluded. It will also mean that the NDIS can say no to things it was previously forced to fund through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal or Federal Court findings. The proposed bill currently being considered in parliament also gives the NDIA the power to collect debts from participants or change their plans if they don’t spend their money the way the NDIS intends. There will be a significant risk for people who do not follow the proposed list of what is and isn’t an NDIS support. The consultation is currently open, and while AAPi is preparing a submission, it's vital that all members providing NDIS services also contribute.
