From championing sustainability and second-hand shopping to reinventing the timeless suit, these menswear shops are refining men’s style in Hong Kong

Shopping for clothes and accessories in Hong Kong can get a bit monotonous for men, as most brands stick to basics in black, blue or white, and stripes, plaid or chequered if they offer patterns at all. So if you’re a man looking to inject a touch of personal style into your clothes but don’t know where to go, we don’t blame you. In fact, we want to help you. So here are five menswear boutiques shaking up the men’s fashion scene in Hong Kong.

The trick to elevating mens’ style isn’t to go crazy with colours and prints if that isn’t something you’re comfortable with. Instead, it’s about quality fabrics, flattering silhouettes and just a touch of the unexpected to add a point of interest. So whether it’s a classic cut but in fun textures, colourful and chic casual wear curated from sustainable European vendors or quality tailoring that’s redefining what a suited silhouette looks like, these menswear boutiques can help you kickstart revamping your sense of style.

Salvo

Hamish Peddie is the mind behind Salvo, an unpretentious menswear boutique founded in 2021 and it’s a great place to start if you’re after vibrant shades and bold prints. However, it’s also great for classic staples in fine textures and silhouettes that can carry you through any trend. He brings an European sensibility to the shop’s offerings in the form of high-quality buttoned-down shirts, trousers, footwear and lifestyle items in timeless cuts, tasteful patterns and breathable fabrics that’s perfect for the humid weather. Salvo emphasises sustainability by only stocking brands that are eco-conscious in their design, production and distribution processes.

The brand’s cool vibes are reflected in the brick-and-mortar shop’s design too—from the abstract blue-and-white tiled sign that graces the storefront to the warm wooden and deep blue aesthetics of the interiors.

The Anthology

Entrepreneur Buzz Tang partnered with bespoke tailor Andy Chong in 2018 to start The Anthology, a menswear boutique that makes traditional suits feel fresh. Having learnt the impact of sharp dressing while growing up in Hong Kong, and then observing the skills of world-class tailoring at Savile Row while studying in London, Tang wanted to offer bespoke and more youthful versions of ready-to-wear pieces such as jackets, trousers and suits. The Anthology offers everyday items made of linen, cotton and wool but in more relaxed cuts and bolder prints and colours, and boasts Love Actually (2003) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) actor Bill Nighy as a fan. We rest our case.

Drop93

Drop93 is an extension of The Armoury—a Hong Kong-based menswear tailoring shop founded by entrepreneurs Mark Cho and Alan See—that offers pre-owned as well as never-before-worn old stock from The Armoury and other luxury brands. Drop93 started as an e-commerce shop in 2017 and opened its first brick-and-mortar store on Duddell Street last year.

To maintain its core value of sustainability, the shop curates vintage collections of suits, shirts and accessories by sourcing them all from The Armoury’s trusted clientele or craftspeople with whom the founders have worked closely over the years.

Harrison Wong

Designer Harrison Wong has been a fixture in Hong Kong’s fashion scene ever since he opened his eponymous menswear shop at PMQ in 2014. While he does work with a mostly neutral colour palette, Wong reinvents traditional pieces by deconstructing them, such as removing sleeves from a blazer, or by crafting them in unexpected materials such as organza.

Shop S206, PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central; Shop 21B, LCX, Level 3, Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui; Unit 305, 3/F, The Mills, 45 Pak Tin Par Street, Tsuen Wan

Prologue

Offering bespoke and ready-to-wear garments, Prologue blends timeless menswear styles with modern sensibilities. Since its opening in 2017, Prologue has celebrated high-quality vintage design in its formal and casual wear, accessories and footwear.

Co-founder Jerry Tong also takes to Instagram to give styling tips and to demonstrate how to pair pieces. For example, he’ll style a mocha brown linen suit with a dark blue denim shirt, and throw a colourful patterned tie into the mix. The result? An undeniably dapper look that feels simultaneously contemporary and classic.

According to the French fashion house, there is not yet a succession plan

Gabriela Hearst is leaving her role as creative director of Chloé after a three-year stint with the French luxury brand.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the departure is an “amicable” one, and the decision came from the Uruguayan designer’s desire to focus on, among other projects, her eponymous label.

Hearst’s final collection for the house will be for the spring/summer 2024 show slated for Paris Fashion Week in September this year.

This follows the June 5 announcement of the Chloé x Atelier Jolie collaboration on the brand’s Instagram account.

“Maison Chloé becomes the creative collective Atelier Jolie’s inaugural collaborator with a forthcoming ready-to-wear capsule collection celebrating modern femininity,” the post reads, and adds that the capsule collection is co-designed by Hearst and actress Angelina Jolie.

“It has been a privilege to design with Gabriela Hearst, and I hope all women will feel comfortable and beautiful,” the same post quotes Jolie as saying.

Hearst’s work for Chloé is known for its powerful, feminine aesthetic. For example, the autumn/winter 2023 collection that was inspired by female Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Hearst also frequently referenced her mother’s influence in making sustainably-minded design choices.

In fact, Hearst was instrumental in helping Chloé achieve certified B Corp status in 2021 by pushing for greater sustainability practices during her time there. Her efforts yielded results such as traceability and mindful fabric selection.

Also according to Women’s Wear Daily, it had become challenging for Hearst to balance two massively successful fashion businesses based in opposite ends of the world: Chloé in France and her own brand in New York, USA.

There are thus far no announcements of a succession plan to follow Hearst’s departure.

From BTS’ Jimin and V to Lil Nas X and J Balvin, more and more stars and brands are embracing gender-neutral accessorising

We live in a time when gender roles are being shattered. No colour is delegated to a particular gender—blue isn’t meant for boys and pink isn’t locked to girls. The same holds true for jewellery. Whether it’s rings, bracelets, necklaces, or even earrings, gender-neutral accessories are becoming symbols of confidence, style, and courage.

We’ve seen it from celebrities like BTS members Taehyung (V), Jimin (Tiffany & Co’s newest ambassador), Colombian singer J Balvin, and pop star Lil Nas X, but how did this come to be? To answer that, Tatler dived deep and asked fashion insiders for their thoughts.

Traditionally, jewellery has always been marketed towards a specific gender. Men would usually have simple styles for their necklaces, and only signet rings would have intricate designs. The flashier patterns would be worn by women. Not anymore. People are beginning to accept that we shouldn’t be tying any piece of jewellery to anything. Anyone can wear them if they choose.

The biggest jewellery maisons such as Tiffany & Co and Bulgari are on the frontlines of this more progressive push for epicene jewellery. Tiffany’s Lock Bracelet is positioned as the genderless alternative to wedding rings while Bulgari’s B. Zero 1 2020 collection is marketed as a unisex piece.

The Italian fashion house has appointed the K-pop rapper as its latest global ambassador

K-pop star and NCT member Jeno Lee—professionally known as Jeno—has been named Ferragamo’s new global ambassador, making him the first-ever male celebrity to represent the luxury Italian brand. Jeno and Ferragamo simultaneously announced the collaboration on May 29 on Instagram.

In February, the 23-year-old star had attended the brand’s 2023-2024 fall/winter fashion show in Milan, Italy, where he had met with creative director Maximilian Davis and shared behind-the-scene snippets of his trip on Instagram. He has also been spotted wearing Ferragamo during performances and photoshoots since.

“I am very excited to create a synergy with the brand and looking forward to disclosing our future projects”, said Jeno in his announcement post, while Ferragamo shared in its press release that Davis thinks the rapper’s “captivating personality and ability to connect with international young audiences through his music, style and persona is exceptional. We’re driven by the same passion in our creativity”.

This isn’t the rapper’s first foray into breaking boundaries in the fashion industry. In 2022, he became the first K-pop artist to open a fashion show when he modelled for Vietnamese American designer Peter Do’s 2023 spring/summer collection at New York Fashion Week.

This also isn’t the first time Ferragamo have turned to South Korean stars to represent the brand. Previous ambassadors include K-pop artist and Red Velvet member Seulgi, who was named its global brand ambassador in 2021. Meanwhile, Jeno joins his bandmates Jaehyun, Yuta, Mark and Doyoung—who represent Prada, Louis Vuitton, Polo Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana respectively—as luxury brand ambassadors.

Earlier this year, NASA named Christina Koch as the first woman who will fly to the moon, following her illustrious career as an astronaut and engineer. When she does so, it will be in a spacesuit specially designed by Prada

The last footprint man left on the moon was on December 14, 1972, following the Apollo 17 space mission. Succeeding missions were halted by NASA’s limited budget and adaptation to new technologies. A woman has never walked on the moon. But that looks set to change.

After more than fifty years, NASA plans to return to the surface of the moon with the Artemis III lunar mission, which could take place as early as September 2026. But first, NASA plans to send four astronauts on an eight-day mission around the moon as part of Artemis II, set to take place no earlier than September 2025. In the space agency's efforts to champion greater diversity, the crew will include astronaut Christina Koch, who will be the first woman to go on a lunar mission, and Victor Glover, the first Black person to embark on such a voyage.

Koch is an engineer who has been a NASA astronaut since 2013. She has served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS), and set a world record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman when she spent 328 days in space.

Koch has taken part in six spacewalks, including the first three all-female spacewalks that totalled over 42 hours. For NASA’s Artemis II mission, for which she has been assigned as a mission specialist, the Orion spacecraft will travel beyond the far side of the moon before returning in the closest pass to the moon since December 1972.

Their Royal Highnesses Princesses Maria Carolina and Maria Chiara were in Hong Kong for the Grand opening of Christie’s new Asia Pacific Headquarters. They sat down with Tatler to talk about royal etiquette, women's rights and what it means to be a princess in the 21st century

When one thinks of princesses, what comes to mind are images of Disney princesses—with their flowing gowns, beautiful hairdos and charmed lives. And probably Anne Hathaway’s great performance in The Princess Diaries (2001).

But what about real-life princesses in the modern world? Well, it’s safe to say that the picture is quite different. From royal duties to philanthropic initiatives and embracing multiculturalism: their Royal Highnesses Princesses Maria Carolina and Maria Chiara of Bourbon Two Sicilies believe that modern princesses are in touch with their time. More importantly: they use their position to drive change for the better.

In Hong Kong for the opening of Christie’s new Asia Pacific Headquarters, the two princesses sat down with Tatler to talk about royal etiquette and how they connect to their roots while embracing multiculturalism—and championing women’s empowerment and animal rights.

Having been exposed to so many cultures, how do you approach multiculturalism and how do you connect with your roots?
Princesses Maria Carolina and Maria Chiara: Living between Paris, Monaco, Italy and the US has taught us to fully embrace multiculturalism by adapting to each place’s unique way of life; it gives us a true feeling of being citizens of the world. For example, in our family, we have this habit of switching languages mid-conversation.

But, for us, the most important values are family, our history and our background, which naturally connect us to our roots. No matter where we are, these core values keep us grounded. We feel particularly close to Italy and France, two countries that, though very different, share a deep cultural heritage and are known for their contributions to art, literature, music and philosophy. We feel a profound connection to our roots and the legacy of those who came before us. It’s a privilege to be part of such a rich history and it always reminds us of where we come from.
