SEGA has just announced that global sales of Sonic X Shadow Generations has surpassed one million units - just in time for the game's official physical launch date (which is today). Happy SXSG Day, everyone!

The impressive launch sales figure covers the sum total of physical and digitally-downloaded versions of the game, across all platforms. SEGA's press release, sent to the Sonic Stadium, makes note of the fact that Sonic X Shadow Generations supports a large number of languages "to reach a wider global audience," suggesting that the company sees this as one of the reasons for its launch day success.

Of course, it helps that the game is very very good. Check out our spoiler-free review of SXSG right here to see what we thought of it.

SEGA continues by confirming that it will accelerate its transmedia development plans for the rest of the year, with a global launch of mobile game Sonic Rumble planned for this Winter and the theatrical release of the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which features Shadow's silver-screen debut.

Although the game has technically been available for several days thanks to the Digital Deluxe Early Access, one million units on launch day is a great achievement for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and is a number that will surely grow further as fans and gamers purchase the game long-term over the next couple of months. Congratulations, SEGA and Sonic Team!

Let us know how you're planning to spend Sonic X Shadow Generations Day, and check out the full press release as sent to us by SEGA below.

TOKYO, Japan – Oct. 25, 2024 – SEGA CORPORATION (Head Office: Shinagawa, Tokyo, President COO: Shuji Utsumi, hereinafter SEGA®) is pleased to announce that the worldwide sales of their game SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS that released globally on Friday, October 25, 2024, has surpassed one million units*1.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a title that combines two games: Sonic Generations™, where players can enjoy speed-running various stages with Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, enhanced with new elements, and "Shadow Generations," a completely new game featuring the dark hero Shadow racing through dynamic environments. The story begins as a mysterious creature called the "Time Eater" creates distortions in time and space, setting off separate adventures for Sonic and Shadow. Players can look forward to a high-speed action-adventure with distinct gameplay experiences and narratives.

In addition to offering a new "Sonic" gameplay experience, this title supports 12 languages *2 to reach a wider global audience and was released simultaneously worldwide on multiple platforms. It was also involved in large-scale global promotions, including exhibiting at events around the world.

To further grow the Sonic IP, we have focused on transmedia development as an important strategy, which involves the global expansion across various media verticals and merchandising. Furthermore, this fiscal year is themed "Fearless: Year of Shadow" for the Sonic IP, focusing on global initiatives that highlight Shadow.

Besides this game, we will accelerate our transmedia development with the mobile game Sonic Rumble™, which is scheduled to launch this winter, as well as the distribution of the “Knuckles” show on Paramount+, and the worldwide release of the “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” movie, which is slated for release this December, and we will work to further raise awareness of the Sonic IP and expand the brand.

How many copies did Frontiers sell at Launch? Fantastic number so far and well deserved. Movie 3 will push sales hard.

I need a platform to complain so I suppose I'll say what I need to here. GAME, the UK retailer have charged me for the game and said I'd receive it on day one but are now telling me my order doesn't exist, despite me pre-ordering back in June.

Not news on if I'll ever receive it, so I'm a bit peeved today. Hope I can receive it at some point and I hope everyone is enjoying the game, because it looks great. Have fun everyone and don't let me spoil your fun!

iirc, SEGA stated that Frontiers sold 2.5 millions copies a month after launch. Selling one million copies in the first day alone is fantastic! I expect SXSG to hit 2.5 million faster than Frontiers did.

That's crazy! I'd bet sales will go up even further in December when the third movie hits theaters.

Would be kewl to have some comparisons to other games, Sonic or not.

I do hope the game sells well though.

I want it physical copy now, but currently abroad for a month, so deciding if I should buy an import copy or wait until I get back to my country of residence to get it there.

Sorry, I missed this, for some reason.

This is great news! I like how this was done in a short time! Great job, Sega!

You can't compare most games 1 to 1 in terms of sales because success is rated differently for different games. The amount of resources put into it dictates how many units need to be pushed in order to be considered a success. Most of the market would be beside themselves with joy if their games pushed 1 Mil on day one. Pokemon or COD would probably be looking to fire people for numbers that low.

    For context.

It took Frontiers about a month to hit 2.5 Mil.

The last major Pokemon game sell 10+ Million in like 3 days.

Mario Oddesy pushed a little more than 2 Mil in its first week.

Keeping in mind that Frontiers OBLITERATED expectations - and that SxS appears to be well ahead of that pace - It looks like Sega is gonna be pretty stoked about how this one ends up.
