The Biden-Harris administration on Monday unveiled a proposal that would expand the Affordable Care Act's coverage of contraceptives to include over-the-counter contraception with no cost sharing.

The ACA already mandates that most private health plans cover prescription contraceptives without cost

"Free"... aka taxpayer paid.. no thanks - I do not want to fund this effort.

@veebee13 Why not fund? I ask this as a serious question.

If based on religious - then I well understand. Don't agree but understand.

If economic then I suggest you are missing a longer term picture. It is much cheaper to avoid pregnancies than to pay later.

If sociological. I would be interested in your comment as there are many facets to this area.

Because the reinterpretation of 'gender' by the progressive Dems means that in any ACA plan it would be put assessed against all.... what is it now.. 72?... genders and thus incur additional costs for plans regardless of gender. This is a failure seen in other parts of ACA which resulted in ACA plans being costly and encouraged Trump to release 'skinny' plans for folks who don't need or want benefits they have no use for.

TL;DR: it drives ACA costs up while providing negligible benefits for informed consumers.

@kmi Lets just disagree and let it go.

Gender has nothing to do with the physical sex of a person. If you are physically female then you can get pregnant no matter why gender you believe yourself to be. Physically male - then no. Don't confuse biology with psychology.

If they want my vote, they should offer a choice of free filet mignon or wild caught salmon (some voters don't like red meat) along with a legislative path to actually deliver on such an offer.

@Maui.woweee Agree but at times personal and public interests coincide and can be a positive. Do you believe the reduction of unintended pregnancies a positive or negative. "Just say no" has never worked be it drugs or sex.

Personally I support expanded birth control over the currently popular amongst Dems of 'abortion on demand and without apology to the 9 month and beyond'.

Roe V Wade was a relic of a bygone time when birth control wasn't widely available or affordable.

Along with widely available contraceptives, education and campaigns promoting 'safe sex' or even 'abstinence' are the better option along with pro-family and pro-life policies and support for those who ultimately find themselves pregnant. I don't think this is debatable.

Not soon enough - Kamala Harris is a prime example of why we need programs like this. Donald Trump is another good reason. If their parents would have had access to these free medications, we wouldn’t have to choose between two unqualified candidates. Maybe.

Free? Someone has to pay for it. Nothing is free. They mean tax payer funded.

@No Wars...Vote Trump I honestly don't know but how many pills can you buy with the cost of one child delivered paid for by MEDICARE/MEDICAID and that doesn't even consider longer term health care costs?

Is it vote buying and pandering? Yes, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad idea.

Contraceptives, ok.

As long as we can agree that abortion =/= contraception, I think this is largely non-controversial.

The same way Trump's pro-life plan for coverage of IVF by example is also non-controversial.

There's a real lack of education especially among the left where they conflate abortion with contraception.

Contraception has, since Roe v Wade and the 70s, become widely available, cheap, reliable, and effective, which was probably the most obvious reason for Roe V Wade to be returned to the States and out of the inappropriate domain of Federal law.

There really should be more efforts to return to the Clinton era 'safe legal rare' and promotion of contraceptives and abstinence for those not prepared to start families.

Of course the left will fly in and start spouting about how coverage should be universal because of trans-men needing contraceptives, raising costs for everyone by forcing it to be put on everyone's policy. Luckily, Trump's "skinny plans" in part helped alleviate that.

@kmi Education and access to contraceptives is key . But in Louisiana the Gov thinks adding Ten Commandments in classrooms is the solution to most things will leave us where always been with head in sand when politics and religion aren’t separate.

It’s not a left gov either and our education system is dead last , but priorities right? Careful when associating right with being educated vs left.

Interesting you dropped by to try and score some points against the 'right'.
Interesting but unfortunately, misguided.

In Oregon they dropped standardized testing because "Math is racist". That's a bit more cuckoo than say, seeing "Thou shalt not Kill" in the classroom.

Our education system has failed us ever since the BOE was erected and liberals took over the schooling of the young, and the latest - political - trend harming kids is this DEI BS and the soft racism of lowering standards.

I'd be careful when anyone associates the mental illnesses of liberalism and the left with providing an education far faster than worrying about moralism preached in the classroom, in particular a moralism that is the foundation of the country and the success of the West.

Back to the point - the moderate position of the Clinton era was and likely still is the most broadly appealing one.

@kmi was just saying there are education failures on both sides and gave an example of one that’s headed that way. We are last in education and a lot of the Deep South red states are. Not sure that’s anything you don’t already know.
Don’t agree with Oregon stance either as it makes no sense but would need to research it being “racial”, but one is lined out from our forefathers due to issues that comes with it. Politics and religion as it bleeds into education one is a flash in pan likely historically speaking. Those radical things usually find center ground after pendulum swings to far one way or another ie. reversal of some of the Oregon drug policies.

If point was about Clinton era why did you highlight the left? I tend to agree with the Clinton comment
Any one that blames one side without seeing failing of other is always going to be blind. I would love for South education and budget control to work, it has not in many cases.

Nothing is "free." Someone has to pay for it. It (whatever "it" is) may be free to the recipient, but it's not free to society.

Perhaps the correct question to ask is, "Which medicines or medical supplies should be paid for by tax revenues?" Would over-the-counter contraceptives be on the top of the list? Why not aspirin or other non-prescription pain killers? How about antibiotic ointments or band-aids?
What heads a politician's list is more likely to reflect an agenda than a medical need.

@nckadams I didn’t mean to imply it’s free. Preventative shows economically it saves more money long term to do it vs to not do it. That is how I was seeing it

A better idea would be to make this available free in the countries from which people are migrating illegally to the US. A bipartisan idea Reps and Dems can agree on :-)
