This concept screenshot illustrates how storage access controls could have been implemented in the Android mobile operating system, instead of restricting all access.
For internal storage, memory card, and USB on-the-go, access could be set individiually by the user to "Read and write", "Read only", and "No access" for each application separately.
Note that 1234-ABCD is an example [[:en:volume serial number|volume serial number]], as those are used instead of /storage/extSdCard/ since Android version 6.0 "Marshmallow".

This modified screenshot shows options to allow the user to access the memory card (typically MicroSD) through mass storage, optionally with or without write access.
Due to interference with the mobile phone's operating system, such options would not be feasible for internal storage, except if the user data was stored on a separate logical partition, as was the case with early mobile phones

This concept screenshot shows settings that could make the use of MTP (media transfer protocol) more convenient:

• Reset connection with one tap if stuck
• Toggle write access, to avoid modifying anything when not desired.
• Preserve date and time stamp if supported by MTP client
• Share only a selected directory instead of the entire user storage, which can be of use in insecure environments.
